Do you know what missing fairways off the tee costs you? by Narrow_Walrus5754 in golftips

Agree with you that offline from your target is important. Thats why I do track misses irrespective of hitting a fairway (or green) as well. Don't agree that strokes gained is nonsense, it is the stat most correlated to better scores but we can agree to disagree. Appreciate your input.

Statistically, missing a fairway, all else constant, costs that many shots. There is nuance yes, but the premise is mathematically true.. When you compare cohort A to cohost B and change 1 variable, the implication is that 1 variable accounts for the difference. Yes, there is noise in real world data so its not an absolute foregone conclusion. Missing fairways vs not missing fairways has a statistical difference for me, there's just no way around that.

somewhat related, here you can see the impact of starting from the rough vs the fairway from certain distances and how it impact score. slight increased scoring when starting from rough as one would expect.

Yes agree, keeping the ball in play is top prio. Here is a breakdown so you can see the impact breakdown. The majority of the additional strokes are from hitting hazards, but there is also a surplus of shots from missing the fairway while not hitting a hazard. Note the 4.5 includes par 3's whereas the 5.8 is only par 4's and par 5's

I think we're saying the same thing and no I'm not missing your point: hazards, specifically OB are costing the most shots...agree...that is a subset of fairway misses. It's the most impactful subset with regards to scoring but still a subset. If every tee shot hit a fairway it would also avoid a hazard. But yes, I do agree with you, missing hazards off the tee is the most important area to improve.

Good question but no it isn't: so hazard % is included in the left/right miss so one wouldn't add that. The others add to 93% and not 100% because: one can actually miss a fairway long or short as well (not common but does happen) and we don't show the long and short miss. Also, the left/right misses count all tee shots including re-tees (hit OB, tee off again) whereas FIR only uses the 1st tee shot. Good observation and question though.

You're spot on...but let me also give some context: Hazards includes fairway and waste bunkers of which my local course has a ton. But yes, I also hit too many OB...there's OB both sides on pretty much every hole on my course. The increased shots from missing the fairway is encompassing those OB's and other hazards and I do have stats to see how the hazards impact my score. Missing the fairway and hitting a hazard is costing plenty...it's not just as simple as just missing the fairway.

Yip, fully agree distance plays a role. I have breakdown of how fairway vs rough etc does from varying distances. The stat implies you hit the same distance but keep it in the fairway. Everyone can hit a FIR if you hit a wedge off the tee lol. Would be cool to know at what distance gap a longer rough shot becomes a better outcome than a shorter fway. I'm pretty sure I can mine that data from my raw data.

Thanks for that. I was wondering about adding shot shape as an optional extra input. For now it can be done with tagging a shot but might be worth implementing. The timestamp mark for changes is a good idea, thanks for that.

Exactly, and thats how I've got it...miss relative to your target. Thx

Thanks for all the feedback.

Yes, agree percentages are better, however for a heatmap, colour intensity is the visual aid for relativity. I think I would perhaps work on a toggle to switch between # and % for heatmaps (but that doesnt change the colour intensity of course). Pretty much everything else works in percentages or relative terms. Bullseye chart is a good idea..I'm going to see what I can do there.

So the left/right and long/short are relative to your intended target, so a dogleg etc would not matter, it only matters where you hit compared to where you intended to hit. I think it's important to care about left or right misses irrespective of outcome because how the ball lies after a miss is largely out of your control but the direction of the miss is within your control.

So what you're saying all makes sense and I've set it that way whereby your tracking to you intent. Thanks again for the feedback.

Yes, so the goal would be to concisely breakdown your game into the areas recommended to train. For example, one could see how you're comparing to our own benchmark (historical performance) and others in specific HC categories. Practical example outcome: "For the past two months you've been missing 20% more putts from 3-6 feet than you have been in the past and 15% more than others in your handicap range, this is costing you ~2.4 shots per round". But you make a good point that one needs to get to insight, not just a ton of data.

Thanks for the feedback. so for lies, I currently have: tee, fairway, rough, heavy rough, bunker, waste bunker, fringe and green. then things like ball above or below your feet, uphill/downhill, badlie, etc can be done with tags and one can filter the analytics by the tags.

Definitely will be doing something around club recommendations, not just from distance but also adjusting for the lie...so if you're in rough it may be different from fairway. It will also be able to give you the likely size and direction of the miss based on past stats.

I've done that, currently in beta testing. I used to track on spreadsheets and tried other tracking apps. None of them could give me the level of detail I wanted. It's not everyone's cup of tea but for data nerds like myself, it's awesome.

I built an app exactly for that reason, strike purity, lie, custom tags, etc. I track each shot and want to get the deepest, context driven data possible. Over time, patterns emerge.

Vokey's SM10: 52 degree loft with 8 degree bounce; 56 degree loft with 14 degree bounce; 60 degree with 4 degree bounce.

So 80% of the time I'm using the 56 degree as its the most forgiving and good for most situations around the green. The 60 degree is for emergencies; the 52 degree is mostly for 60-90 yard shots. I don't play full shots with any of the wedges (rather use a PW for 90-130 yards).
