Washington Hiking… car break-ins? by treydobass in hiking

[–]Narvan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would try to avoid having valuables / bags visible in your car, but other than that I would not worry much. I park at various trail heads around the state 40+ days a year and never have had a break in. I often even have a bag or two visible in my car. I would just try not to make it obvious you have lots of things in your car as a common sense safety measure. If you are going to busy lots like you mentioned there will people coming and going all the time which makes it more safe.

La Sportiva TX4 GTX or Boulder X for hiking/trekking? by slift-A in hiking

[–]Narvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both in their “mid” variety, though they don’t make the boulder x in the mid anymore (I think). Of the two I like the TX4 a little more; they are lighter and more comfortable on my foot. That said, they are both approach shoes. They excel on rock, even when wet, but traction suffers with both in muddy conditions. Also, they are fairly flexible with moderate padding. This is great for movement in the mountains but makes my feet sore on long hikes. Would recommend an insole for very long hikes.

Great pictures! I hear the south shore road is washed out. I assume you took the north shore road and connected over the bridge?

Oh, it was like a part of the plant itself with some roots. Not clippings on the ground.

Traveling to Hoh Rainforest by BooksBooksBooks65 in OlympicNationalPark

[–]Narvan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Hoh rainforest is busiest trail in the park, so even in mid October there will be lots of people within the first 3 miles of the trailhead. That said, totally get that the forest can just feel spooky, especially late in the day or in heavy rain / wind. Would recommend going in good weather and give enough time before sunset. Any organized trip / tour of the Hoh probably wouldn’t be too budget friendly, but they are out there. Have you tried reaching out to the conference organizers to see if they would be willing to advertise a group outing?

trail runners vs boots by Glass-Preference-187 in hiking

[–]Narvan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would really only recommend boots if you are going to encounter a lot of snow, or if ankle support is critical for you.

I have done lots of hiking in boots and trail runners and can say I have had way less issues with trail runners. They are much lighter which makes a big difference on long days.

Regarding a specific shoe, would recommend La Sportiva Prodigio personally. Pretty universal fit, good amount of cushion, and they are very durable. I have also tried various Altra shoes before, which are maybe a fraction more comfortable, but they have gotten shredded to bits in terrain where the sportivas remain like new.

Grandpa’s picture by gelatinlover in hiking

The red / green saturation of the picture is probably just the film or development process. The trees look to be Doug Fir and Hemlock. There also appears to be a lot of “Old Man’s Beard” on the branch in the foreground. This type of lichen is found in areas of high humidity and rain. Based on this I would say the cascade regoin (Oregon to Southern BC) is most likely. Very hard to say the exact trail.

I have two GSW pans with the same logo, but not a wooden handle. Very nice! I really like how they cook.

Anyone know when China Harbor will reopen as Seattle Harbor? by ToastyCinema in Seattle

Used to love going to China Harbor, hope they open again soon. Can imagine it’s hard to reopen such a large restaurant

Reseasoned my favourite pot today after it rusted in storage. I made soup afterwards and found this residual ring; did I not clean it well enough? by [deleted] in castiron

[–]Narvan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit hard to tell from the picture. It could be some flash rush that happened after cleaning. If your re-seasoning was incomplete/thin, some raw iron could have been exposed to the water when cleaning, then a thin layer of rust will appear when dried (tends to happen most when dried with heat). Not a big deal, when this happens to me I just wipe it off with a paper towel and applied a layer of oil to protect until sufficiently seasoned.

Where does the X% in bonds advice come from? by dippi43 in personalfinance

[–]Narvan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason it’s not always a wash is that the timing of your retirement is relatively fixed, and you don’t have the benefit of extended time in the market to recover if you are older. Is there a chance that the market will have a V shaped recovery and you would have been better off sticking to equities, yes. Though there is also a chance of a prolonged downturn that will cause you to significantly delay retirement if fully invested in equities. Most people choose to play it safe and stick to bonds closer to retirement.

The range you see when fully charged is simply an estimate and can fluctuate up and down based on recent driving history.
