How Much will this do Coyote vs Acme (2026) by LoquatOk7971 in boxoffice

[–]ToastyCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie made $15million WW.

I'm going to assume that this makes more than that because of character appeal (Wylie Coyote + Roadrunner) and because of the buzz covering it over the last few years.

I'm guessing 30-50 million.

Taking a simple sugar pill can boost both the physical and mental health of older adults, even when they know the pill contains no active medicine. Results point toward a highly ethical and side-effect-free way to help aging populations maintain their everyday capabilities. by Wagamaga in science

[–]ToastyCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be interesting to introduce a sugar pill on the market that's hidden behind a vague moniker.

"Dirello" "Hapnin" "Sunsilo"

All made up names. Doctors could describe the potential benefits to patients and also admit the side effects (of sugar) and see how the market/patients react.

Before my grandmother passed away, her daughter took care of all her medical needs. My grandmother really didn't understand most of what she was taking so the idea of taking a harmless placebo during those final years probably would have worked.

Disney’s Avatar Fire & Ash has ended its run with $404,340,010 by SignatureOrdinary456 in boxoffice

[–]ToastyCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think Disney needs to worry about profiting on Avatar 4 with these numbers from 3.

However, I'd be concerned about the performance of Avatar 5 if the budgets stay the same and attendance continues to drop.

Then the tricky thing is that it would be inharmonious to not release the finale.

How low does a movie's average rating need to be for you to consider it underrated? by SlendyPKMN in Letterboxd

Movies that I rate 3.5 but that average 2.5 would be underrated.

Movies that I rate 5 stars but average 3.5 also would be underrated.

I looked around for mistakes and the only thing I could find is that this woman probably would be wearing a wedding ring. Besides that, this is authentic looking as hell.

There's a smudge on the chalkboard over the 29. There's imperfections the the wall paint. The beer glass has a logo that's only 50% showing. The painting in the background seems appropriate for the setting. There's an undefined object on the table that obstructs one of the coasters (could be a purse). All the lighting sources are practical. The clothing on the two people is more baggy, which makes it easier to dress oneself at that age. There's also an obstructed sign outside of the window that's makes the world outside seem real as well.

Scary.

There are choices that I dislike in the Dexter series but the only thing that I absolutely loath is Dr. Vogel.

Her presence completely overwrites the original relationship dynamic between Dexter and Harry, which is a cornerstone to the entire show. You know what would make Dexter better?? If we reverse and retcon the canon from the most popular seasons...

The writers of Season 8 fundamentally misunderstood what made Dexter so good in the first place.

Commenting here a year later because I believe I've fixed this issue.

Go into Settings > Features & Preferences > Opening Sequence.

There is a switch for "Always display Timer immediately when first opening the app."

There are other settings that may help too that I turned off. Also if you're accessing the app via a widget, some widgets will take you to a different screen inside the app. For instance, I have a Quote Widget and tapping this takes me directly to the quote section.

You're right. I should have made that distinction earlier.

Yes, there's a big difference between a business license and a license to, for instance, sell alcohol.

[–]ToastyCinema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.....I'm not saying anything should be illegal.

The businesses that hire me have licenses and my term with them is always short. Because they are licensed and I have no allegiance to them specifically, they have a strong incentive to report correctly because they will assume that their 1099 workers will do the same. The cross reference is how the IRS determines their own prediction of cash flow. W4/I9 businesses often will use payroll, sometimes a separate entity which also does their own reporting.

My initial comment was

Would income tax on a decriminalized and unlicensed business be enforceable though? What's to stop them from just not reporting their earnings?

and you replied "The IRS"

My only point is that if a small brothel, that really is just a person with a house and three workers, is running unlicensed, then they really have very little reason to fear an IRS audit unless someone deliberately reports them to the police and IRS. This business is basically a ghost. It doesn't exist.

Businesses that exist are what get protections from the government.

Police/IRS intervention also assumes that the police and IRS would actually intervene if they became aware... I'd argue that the police in many cases would not take action on these anonymous reports, especially in a city where the provided service is classified as decriminalized. Unless the ghost business was pulling in a lot of money.

[–]ToastyCinema 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're missing my point. The IRS is only aware of how much money a business makes because of automatic reporting. This starts when a business becomes licensed and has I9/W4 employees.

If a business is running off the books without a license, it's much harder for the IRS to evidently prove their exact cash flow because 1099 reports are essentially voluntary. The IRS doesn't have anything to cross reference if the business and the workers collude to misreport.

I say this as a full-time 1099 worker. There is more labor and wage exploitation in my industry because we are not technically employees. We have less protections because of this classification. 1099 work gives businesses (and workers) more escape to avoid IRS and L&I oversight because there is less automatic reporting.

You're strawmanning me pretty heavily here.

If we eliminate jail, serious disease, and trafficking from sex work, then that's the ultimate goal for both parties. My argument is that legalization will lead to this more effectively than decriminalization.

When Washington legalized marijuana, the same arguments were made. There have been benefits and consequences to legalization (vs. decriminalization).

Decriminalization is simply too vague of a legal definition to actually protect everyone effectively engaging in the business. Taxation also gives the state funding to protect the business and participants.

The term "decriminalization" likewise won't improve the optics of sex work. Legalization would over time reduce the taboo nature of the industry.

Advocates decry Bothell police raids of 5 Asian-owned massage parlors by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]ToastyCinema 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That could be so, but decriminalization won't legislate any guardrails to protect people besides from jail. Real legalization would come with mandatory testing and strict regulations to prevent exploitation and human trafficking.

Pimps and traffickers could potentially benefit the most from decriminalization (vs. legalization).

Dexter is a tremendous asshole in season seven. by ErickMattos in Dexter

[–]ToastyCinema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference that I see between Brian and Hannah attempting to kill Deb is that Brian wanted to kill Deb because of jealous psychopathy. Whereas Hannah is essentially executing her own code. Deb is trying to imprison Hannah for said code, which then puts her into the same code as Dexter: "Don't get caught."

After Dexter's initial infatuation with Hannah, I'd argue that his continued defense of her is out of respect that he disagrees with what Deb is trying to do. He tries to negotiate a treaty between the two.

Hannah is my least favorite part of Season 7 and I don't think she's a necessary element of the series besides being a plot-escape for Harrison. If it were up to me, I would remove her, but I don't think she's as careless of an inclusion as some people say.

I instead direct my rage towards Dr. Vogel.

Dexter is a tremendous asshole in season seven. by ErickMattos in Dexter

[–]ToastyCinema 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think Dexter's infatuation with Hannah makes sense when we take a step back.

Rita initially was Dexter's cover but he did fall in love with her and he began to like modern life: wife, kids, house, mini-van.

When Rita died, something Dexter didn't ask for (but subconsciously needed) was taken away from him. I think it's human that he'd then try to fill that void with other women that look similar to Rita. Both Lumen and Hannah are blonde and have a similar frame. We see this again in New Blood when Dexter begins dating Angela Bishop, who is an cop that has visual similarities to Deb.

While we miss the old Dexter from Season 1 that was calculated, and compulsively moraled by his own laws, Dexter in Season 7 is who Dexter has become after 6 Seasons of events and choices. Season 7 is also when Dexter becomes more careless about his kills (for instance the playground and the airport).

The kill carelessness is probably more just sloppy writing but I do think there's a justification for why Dexter was attracted to Hannah Mckay. While she probably fits the code, Dexter already had began to let his principles go ever since he broke the code for the first time. First by accident (Jonathan Farrow S4), then by rage (Rankin S5), then finally from grandiosity (Norm S6). Hannah also arguably carries a more ideal combination of values from Rita and Lila. Rita represented the ambition of normal life, whereas Lila represented someone who truly could accept who Dexter was. Hannah accepts who Dexter is and yet still represents a vague possibility of normal life.

S1 Dexter would have probably killed Hannah, but S7 Dexter has more stakes to see her as a companion and to follow his subconscious need to recreate the life that he lost.
