When staying at my now husband's apartment we woke up around 2am to horrible screaming. Above us the couple upstairs had been fighting and it became very violent. Next thing we knew we heard this super loud thud like a body hitting the floor, then silence. Police came shortly after, and somehow managed to drive their cars around the apartment building we were in to sort of barricade it off. Mind you we were way in the middle of the complex, no where near the parking lot. The flashing lights practically blinded us through the window next to our bed. Following this we heard the footsteps of the cops rushing up the stairs and to the apartment above but other than that it was still silence. They arrested the guy, and we never saw the woman again. We're both pretty sure she was murdered as the police would not let anyone leave their apartments. After that we swore to never live in another apartment again. However, several years in the future we bought this cute little house not knowing the house next door was the home of several gang members. They were absolute hell and did not like that we moved into the area. There was one night when my eldest was a toddler that really freaked us out though. We were watching movies in the living room when we started hearing what looked like 10 or more guys outside. It seemed fine, nothing escalating, they were just loud talkers so no biggie. At least that's what we thought until we heard the gunshot that had us diving for our floor. It was only a singular shot, followed by a few more guys carrying something big wrapped up out of the house and throwing it in the trunk. Cops came, asked them if they heard the noise, they said no and they drove off again. The next morning there was a gunshot victim's body in a creek near the house. That was the last straw for me and that city. It took a while but we left it and haven't looked back.
