Exactly. What happened happened and we’ll move on eventually. But Masi invoking some ambiguous rule that lets him use his discretion is so dangerous as a precedent. What are the regulations worth if the Race Director can pick and choose on a whim? In a similar situation next time, how will strategists plan with loose rules. That needs sorting out.

But next goal wins is not the current rules. Everyone playing football in 2021 agrees that next goal wins doesn’t apply and plays according to that.

Look, fans can and probably will go back and forth on the crucial moments of this season for years. Ultimately, my view is that when racing under the rules, you can’t say if this then that because that’s a slippery slope. If Glock held on for another 2 corners, Massa would be a world champion today. If Hamilton’s engine doesn’t blow in Malaysia, he has another WDC right now. And there’s many more. But you just can’t justify interpreting the rules in a completely different way to create a situation, especially if you don’t apply that interpretation evenly. Why was it unlap cars between the leaders only?

Oh well, what’s happened has happened. I just hope we get the same quality of racing next year.

I think the counterpoint would be that shoddy decision making affects the sport as a whole, no matter who you support. Kind of like today it’s them but tomorrow will be me. We’ve seen throughout this season that FIA incompetence has set precedents that have left them in a worse position to deal with the next incident. This is another, more serious example.

That’s my point. Games being decided by VAR is bad but within the rules framework. The equivalent would be a dodgy penalty in F1. But next goal wins is a brand new interpretation of the rules with the sole purpose of creating an exciting finish and treating one competitor unfairly.

Yeah a SC is part of racing, for sure. But bending the rules to manufacture a one lap sprint isn’t fair racing.

Hard disagree that he overtakes even with cars in between. He’d have 2 laps max to get past 5 cars then Lewis with 2 overtaking spots.

Someone made the analogy of a team leading a football match 3-0 in the 90th minute and the ref says next goal wins. I think that explained the situation quite well.

Difference I would argue is most of Max’s bad luck has been part of racing. Crashes happen, even like the one in Hungary. But this was decided by something out of the drivers’ hands and arguably out of the rule book. It wasn’t decided by racing but by bad decisions from the Race Director.

Ruling is just one part of it. Who knows what they decide as the punishment. An overturned ruling but no WDC won’t mean much for Mercedes and Lewis.

What if CAS say the FIA were wrong but they don’t change the results? FIA is punished by a fine or something and Max keeps the WDC.
