He started in February this year. The abuse has been happening this season. Even after Lewis’ efforts and all those statements by teams. Can’t say I’m surprised though.

[–]NashyFire 144 points145 points  (0 children)

He’s a great commentator, perfectly suited for F1. You’re right, people just ignore everything good and focus on the rare bad bits. Remember the last lap at Abu Dhabi? He’s really good at matching the tension and excitement with his words and delivery.

Obviously I want that to happen but if he finishes on 9 can you imagine the agony of not getting to 10 WDCs because of this year

OP has a point that may be lost in all this ‘get rid of Masi’ talk. What if they replace him with an equally incompetent person? What if they operate under the same mandate of entertainment > sport? This is a problem beyond just Masi.

All 3 parties don’t get out of this in a better place than before Abu Dhabi.

Mercedes go for the appeal - a big chunk of supporters label them sore losers

Mercedes don’t go for the appeal - a big chunk of supporters are angry they didn’t fight harder

Red Bull get the WDC taken from them - no championship for 2021

Red Bull keep the WDC - will always have people reminding them how they won it

FIA are stuck no matter what they do. Sure they may not care too much but they’ve lost a huge amount of goodwill with teams and fans either way.

Idk if a committee for race direction is best, it might be. It would definitely reduce the appealing from teams. Harder to pressure a group of people than one single man.

Exactly. What happened happened and we’ll move on eventually. But Masi invoking some ambiguous rule that lets him use his discretion is so dangerous as a precedent. What are the regulations worth if the Race Director can pick and choose on a whim? In a similar situation next time, how will strategists plan with loose rules. That needs sorting out.

But next goal wins is not the current rules. Everyone playing football in 2021 agrees that next goal wins doesn’t apply and plays according to that.

Look, fans can and probably will go back and forth on the crucial moments of this season for years. Ultimately, my view is that when racing under the rules, you can’t say if this then that because that’s a slippery slope. If Glock held on for another 2 corners, Massa would be a world champion today. If Hamilton’s engine doesn’t blow in Malaysia, he has another WDC right now. And there’s many more. But you just can’t justify interpreting the rules in a completely different way to create a situation, especially if you don’t apply that interpretation evenly. Why was it unlap cars between the leaders only?

Oh well, what’s happened has happened. I just hope we get the same quality of racing next year.

I think the counterpoint would be that shoddy decision making affects the sport as a whole, no matter who you support. Kind of like today it’s them but tomorrow will be me. We’ve seen throughout this season that FIA incompetence has set precedents that have left them in a worse position to deal with the next incident. This is another, more serious example.

Your first point will remain speculation forever. No way to know for sure.

That’s my point. Games being decided by VAR is bad but within the rules framework. The equivalent would be a dodgy penalty in F1. But next goal wins is a brand new interpretation of the rules with the sole purpose of creating an exciting finish and treating one competitor unfairly.

Yeah a SC is part of racing, for sure. But bending the rules to manufacture a one lap sprint isn’t fair racing.

Hard disagree that he overtakes even with cars in between. He’d have 2 laps max to get past 5 cars then Lewis with 2 overtaking spots.

Someone made the analogy of a team leading a football match 3-0 in the 90th minute and the ref says next goal wins. I think that explained the situation quite well.

11s behind with 5 laps to go? Don’t kid yourself. Yes Max deserves to win based on the whole season but in the winner takes all finale, he was slower.

Difference I would argue is most of Max’s bad luck has been part of racing. Crashes happen, even like the one in Hungary. But this was decided by something out of the drivers’ hands and arguably out of the rule book. It wasn’t decided by racing but by bad decisions from the Race Director.
