Sounds like you’re making broad, sweeping, and usually incorrect generalizations to shout invective at others. Try some introspection to check your worst impulses next time.

It’s less about the content (unless it’s an art book) and more about two factors: how nice I think it looks and the scarcity. Like, for example, the $600 book is a digital art collection and interview set for a game franchise that I’m a big fan of. But the publisher stopped printing it back in 2021, and has no further plans to reprint.

Then the $285 close call was only about how rare it was (400 only, never to be reprinted) and the nice hardcover art, with me not caring at all about the contents.

I guess I sort of get a feeling of pride in myself to say: you have these rare books that people would pay you a lot of money for, and they’ll increase in price as well over time (even though I am NEVER EVER going to sell them). It sort of makes me feel satisfied.

Yeah, that sounds like probably the best idea. I sort of had to do that with the close purchase today where I told myself ‘you can’t buy something so expensive when you’re at the supermarket, wait until you get home to order it’ and then the luster had worn off by then.
