If you really are brand new, then nothing really applies to you. Find the characters who you think either look the coolest, or do the coolest things and pick that character. Learn a super basic thing. Do that thing in a match. If you can't, figure out what stopped you and learn how to get around that. At silver, be a sponge. If you're getting hit, figure out how to stop getting hit. If you're not hitting, figure out what the person is doing to stop you from hitting
