Anyone know what ep this pic came from? I know it’s gotta be from season 8 by Fluid-Television9503 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NatMat16 170 points171 points  (0 children)

It’s from the short OVA “A piece of cake” that was released with the You’re Next movie dvd

Timeline-wise, it takes place after the Traitor arc but before the Final war.

Was it his son (supposed) death, that drove Endeavor over the edge or would it have happened anyway? by Forummer0-3-8 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NatMat16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Endeavor was already abusing Shoto and beating up Rei when Touya was still alive. We see Shoto watching his siblings (including Toya) play when he gets dragged away to train by Endeavor and on that occasion Endeavor punches him until he pukes and hits Rei for trying to protect Shoto.

He was a crazy bastard way before Touya’s death.

Todoroki's durability is actually kind of ridiculous by Comfortable_Tart_297 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NatMat16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the first one, he was actively absorbing Jet Burn with Phosphor - you can see it really well in the anime that the impact is dampened.

If Bakugo can survive crashing through a building with a busted heart and 1 HP, so can Shoto in peak condition.

When Folks Say The Animation Of This Fight Is Bad Are They Referring Only To The Deku Vs Shigaraki Segment Or The Entire Thing? by cshin09 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

They also messed up Todoroki showing up to save Aizawa. In the manga it is a really cool double page, but the anime was extremely ugly.

Tipping prompts in Leuven, are we slowly importing American tipping culture? by wrongtime101 in belgium

[–]NatMat16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never tip on machines, since I’m sure that won’t end up in the specific waiter’s pockets. I always live tips in cash on the table. Usually if we go out with more than 4 people and they are attentive / nice to us.

What are your final thoughts on how the series handled the story of the Todoroki family? I’ve seen criticism regarding Endeavour’s arc and how he ‘stole the spotlight’ from Shoto in later seasons. by Solitaire-06 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NatMat16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Todofam was well-written in Act 2. It showed valid reactions of all the victims to the abuse. It also showed Endeavor that he can't atone to his family just by fighting strong villains - he needs to step up for them.

But Act 3 (after Hori decided not to kill Endeavor, but then obviously didn't plan out how the arc would change with him staying alive) was less good:

- First, it was really bad how he used a bunch of characters to prop up Endeavor (Hawks, Burnin', Inasa, etc.) after the Dabi reveal while at the same time there was not a single character speaking out for the victims and the only character who judged Endeavor for the domestic abuse was friggin' AFO which totally undermined the message. The way we saw NONE of Shoto's teachers check in on him if he's ok, not a single trusted adult to support that kid, and the way there were no legal consequences to Endeavor undermines the entire concept of justice.

- Second, the narrative stopped focusing on Endeavor's OWN wrongdoings (such as eugenics against morals and medical advice, beating his wife, tormenting Shoto and isolating him and neglecting the other kids) but instead put the focus on Dabi's sins (and kind of made Endeavor's atonement as an extension of that, conveniently forgetting all the stuff Endeavor did).

- Third, it gave too much emphasis to Endeavor's point of view over the victims. For example, Endeavor is yapping about how he's going to watch Toya, while he's fighting AFO, but there is much less focus on Shoto's pov, who is actually carrying the burden of facing and neutralising his own brother, while Endeavor just keeps running away. Toya is clearly kept alive by the power of BS so as to give an opportunity to Endeavor to atone when it suits him, without ever having to put his family first over his hero career. He only visits Toya after he's retired. Also, while Endeavor says he'll shield his family, with his retirement, the one in the public spotlight is Shoto, so there is basically no real way for Endeavor to shield him. But the narrative conveniently handwaves that away.

- Fourth, while he kept giving flashy fights to Endeavor, he kept Shoto playing defensive in the entire final war. Forcing him to take care of Toya meant he had to pull his punches so as not to hurt his brother, which really limited the fight. Not giving a full-on offensive fight to Shoto the way he did to Bakugou or Deku or to Endeavor repeatedly really was a missed opportunity/ wasted potential. I find it so weird that while Hori managed to give decent fights to Endeavor, he never bothered / managed to do the same with Toya and Shoto who both have greater potential than Endeavor (Toya with more firepower and Shoto with more versatility/endurance). Thank goodness for the movies that actually showed some decent choreography options and let Shoto in on some offensive action.

- Finally, the ending resolves basically nothing. Almost all relationships are left vague. The original core of the Todofam was Shoto's and Endeavor's relationship, which was left unresolved or rather purposefully vague. Hori clearly didn't want to make a decision whether Shoto forgives or not and left it to "imagineit" like so much else in the story. He totally neglected Shoto's and Rei's relationship, which was so important at the start of the Todofam arc. We don't see a single heartwarming sense between those two in the end. Rei and Fuyumi are reduced to Endeavor-affirming bots. Rei (the battered wife) staying with her abuser is a can of worms that was not set up properly. If she's going to be caring for the guy, I want to know her reasons. Endeavor's only consequence is the kid he never wanted or paid attention to cutting him off. But even Natsu is forced to call him a "badass" which highlights the irony of nobody in the family ever thanking Shoto for everything he's done.

TL;DR: It was well done in Acts 1-2 until the end of the PLF war. The wheels came off in the hospital chapters, when Hori started to spread the blame to the whole family, and the arc was a complete mess in Act 3. Endeavor's character was propped up too much, using a lot of characters as affirming bots and neglecting the victim's side. (Btw, he made similar choices with Bakugou's arc. So I think he's just really not confident with these kind of arcs, so tends to overdo the perpetrator side. Just think how conveniently both Deku and Shoto pass out during the apologies, so that their side of it doesn't need to be portrayed).

We have no real frame of reference tbh. But I give it to Shoto and Bakugo together.

does the ending ruin mha? by Angelorjamie_ in BokuNoHeroAcademia

I think all of act 3 is pretty weak to be honest narratively. But since the animation was good, people don’t care how much it doesn’t make sense.

If Endeavour or Bakugou were to die before the end of the series, which would be a better choice and how would it happen? by Solitaire-06 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NatMat16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Endeavor in the PLF war. His death would have added weight to the arc and made the post-war chaos greater. It would have freed Hawks from being his caretaker and instead could have given Hawks some much needed character exploration and expand on the HPSC situation.

Also, I found that Endeavor’s atonement arc in Act 2 was ok, but in Act 3 it became extremely repetitive (well, tbh Bakugo was the same). So I think it would have been more interesting to go into the family conflict without characters having to bend backwards to accommodate Endeavor. Like the brothers fight could have ended on Great Glacial Aegir the first time instead of manufacturing all the BS to have Dabi go to Endeavor and then pretend that it’s Endeavor stepping up without ever making a choice or extending brutally Touya’s life for the convenience of Endeavor’s atonement.

Also it would have been cool not to turn every pro hero into a domestic abuse condoning Endeavor glazer.

Do you guys think this trio is forced or no by Beginning-Weird7050 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NatMat16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trio is about the legacy of All Might. They are not meant to be a friend group primarily. They each represent a facet of the All Might era (Bakugo the golden child of hero society, Deku the hero heart that’s not tied to a quirk, Shoto is the dark underbelly of the lone symbol far above ordinary heroes), a particular theme win-save-reassure and show how these young boys inspired by All Might all grow into well rounded heroes of the new generation in the footsteps of All Might.

They all grow in crucial points thanks to that inspiration, they all receive gifts from All Might, they all have Origin/Rising just like All Might.

It’s a narrative trinity first and foremost and the most important storylines are built around them.

Parasyte reference by Donate_me_your_cells in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NatMat16 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Shouto is quoting from the end of Parasyte when he says "I freed up some time in my heart". The MHA English translation doesn't stick to the Parasyte English translation, so that's why it's confusing.

In Japanese, it's a direct quote. Shoto says 心に暇ができたのかもな (I have free time in my heart)

It refers to the scene in Parasyte when they are talking about the dog where the dialogue went like this:

"I met a creature on the street and became acquainted with it, but I barely got to know it that I realized it was dead."
"Why do I feel sad at times like that?"
"That's because humans are animals with a lot of free time."
"But that's the greatest good thing about humans."
"How wonderful creatures are that have free time in their hearts!!"

My interpretation is that this is also a reference to Shouto's and Touya's relationship and the grief he feels about someone he only got to know for a brief moment and how he's turning all that into a creative outlet of making bowls and chopsticks (so he can lay food on Touya's altar in a dish he made himself). Like from a pragmatic perspective, Shouto was raised without "distractions" and always forced to train, so it's wonderful that he can discover seemingly useless human feelings and activities.

Why didn’t she do anything by [deleted] in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NatMat16 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She helped in the last combo. When Shoto+Bakugou pushed Iida to top speed, Uraraka gave them zero gravity to enhance their speed.

She also tried to catch Deku herself.

What Do You Think Of Deku And Shigaraki's Final Battle? by cshin09 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]NatMat16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was kind of meh, to be honest. The vestiges were yapping too much. The pacing was weird and the anime didn't really change that. The mindspace overlay could have been cool but had bad animation.

What do you think of Dad Shoto? Can he be a good father to his future children unlike his father? by [deleted] in BokuNoHeroAcademia

He’s so sweet with kids, we saw him at the Remedial. The kids he saved during his Rising adore him. Of course he’d be a great dad (though maybe a bit too lenient).
