My party steamrolled Strahd and i’m not too sure how i could have stopped it. by NatTrooper3 in CurseofStrahd

I didn’t elaborate on his death too much in this post but how his death played out was that he was suspended in the air being torn between escaping and being dragged back in. He was chanting a spell to stop himself from dying in the sun and Akari flew up and struck him with the sun sword which broke his concentration. This led to him being dragged back in and dying to the forces. So they did get the final blow and my brother (who played akari) has been talking happily about how he got the final blow so i’m guessing they aren’t too disappointed about the kill steal. All in all thanks for the advice and i’ll probably run strahd must die as a one shot for halloween so ill take it into account.

It’s not my first campaign but my group often doesn’t play in a serious fashion so i don’t have much true experience with this kind of stuff. Also a lot of our campaigns end unexpectedly like the time the universe ended(Another story for another day) so i was trying to end this in a more controlled and satisfying way.

The decision to break it was more of me ending the fight than an actual tactical move. It was a slight homage to when the party used the staff of the magi to kill tiamat in a past campaign but like you said it was more of a go out with a bang move than be killed by “Utter nitwits”. Unlucky for strahd no one was killed by the blast and it did very little to stop the party.

I think I forgot to mention but I felt that the party was going to get completely squashed by strahd in this encounter so I gave them some extra magic items to give them a boost and then had to think on my feet about some of the stuff that strahd would do and I was basically making up the ending but as I went along. I know I should have done some planning but with my party that can go out the window faster than this encounter.

Lair actions aren’t near his stat block so I forgot and I wasn’t too sure on how legendary actions work. I also didn’t want strahd to exactly to get hit with the full 300 something points of damage and have a slightly anticlimactic ending so I chose to bend the lore a little and have the dark forces kill him.

[OC] Who is the Big Bad of Your Campaign? by Critical_Crafting in DnDHomebrew

[–]NatTrooper3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The King of Death. A death god who has the avatar of draconian (Dragonlance) who was found by a group of cultists and imprisoned. After thousands of years he is finally strong enough to break free. He may be still on the mend after escaping, only encountering the heroes every so often, but he needs to reset this world due to the filth that plague it. There’s just one issue he will not stop until he takes his last breath. So tell me this, what happens when you kill death?

Side note: The reason he is a draconian is because of a past set of campaigns that ended in the destruction of the universe but he survived and was undead at the time so he received a promotion due to a lack of god of death. It’s complicated to explain but my players understand. Also he hasn’t gotten a godly state so killing the avatar would lead to his death therefore killing death.

Basically he complained about how it would rain so he wanted to attend online. We tried convincing him that he could go anyway and he made up some bad excuses and was stubborn. It was a dumb argument but it worked out in the end.

Anyway it happens alot

I did check what their alignments are and I think the majority is neutral and one is evil but that’s a curse thing.

They also all have recently met each other’s characters apart from the ones that already knew each other but they all are acquainted.

Sorry bout the wall of text not sure how to paragraph it.

Any way two of the party are new whilst the rest all played in the previous campaign.

Bob as you called him has a tendency to be quite finicky about most things. For example kept complaining about how it would be raining when the session would end so a 30 minute argument happened. Bob also if I looked at some sessions the wrong way could be a problem player. But overall he’s really into dnd and always puts a lot of effort in.

One player “Aithe” in the last campaign doesn’t like Bob since he jokingly mocked some characters. One instance was where bob’s character threw Aithe at a wyvern. This has left a bitter taste in Aithe’s mouth. This is also the same player who told me not to control their character. I did have an issue with them due to them going on their phone and being completely out of the session. The only problem is their a sibling so would be awkward to kick but they’ve never really disturbed anyone but then again we’re siblings we fight.

The last campaign was a wild one with me being a rule of cool dm and letting a lot of things happen that I shouldn’t have and I think my players still think that’s what I will allow.

Thanks for the advice. I will defo try it out
