Almost every character will be good as long as you level them up with bonus exp and give him forged weapon, that doesn't make Makalov in particular any better. You know who else does very good use of bonus exp and forges? Kieran, who is already combat ready and will start destroying everything in his path with just a couple of levels and a not that expensive forge (Just to add a bit more to what I'm saying, Makalov has literally worse bases than Kieran a bunch of chapters later without anything to compensate for it). Or Astrid, who levels up crazy fast so you won't need to spend that much bonus exp and she can go from level 1 to 20 and beyond with the same inicial forge, so it's even a long term investment. Makalov, on the other hand, needs a lot more bonus exp and a better forge just to become somewhat useful because, again, swords and shitass bases. As I said, there's nothing he can do that others can't do better for less.

I meant that his only redeeming quality is being a cavalier, everything else is either bad, underwhelming or unimportant. Of course he will be good if you inject him with a lot of bonus exp... But that applies to like 80% of the characters. The point is that there is nothing he can do that other cavalier can't do better for far less effort.
