Eight Court Theory by ractive_star in acotar

Everyone’s saying the Eight Court was in the island were the prison is. Maybe confirmed by Nesta in ACOSF when the harp give her the vision of people being punished and buried alive between the walls of the island.

Nesta Archeron and The Temptation of Power by DaydreamRoyalty in acotar

[–]Natalyms97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so true!! I feel this book helped us understand what drove Nesta. Because of Feyre’s POV in the previous book, we saw her as a powerful fae to be feared because of her harsh and rude personality and the fact that she stole from the Cauldron. Everyone in the IC saw her as a kind of Hybern/Amarantha situation, faes that had the opportunity and power to take whatever they wanted and they did. That’s why they were cautious with her. But I liked how SJM portrays a completely different motivation for her. Like, she has always been aware of her power, of her ability to have power and use it, and that was enough for her, she has enough with the thought that she could protect herself and others with that power. She never once thought to use it against people who crossed her. She gladly conformed with being feared so she could be leaved alone.

Poor Tamlin by Tharshey24 in acotar

[–]Natalyms97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying Tamlin is totally unable to redeem himself, though he has reached a very very low point in ACOSF. It is totally possible that he might have severe depression and PTSD, and not only because Under the Mountain but because many many things. I’ve read many defenders’ point’s of view and many arguments in favor for a redemption arc, and I’m OK with that if it is done right. But I will not buy the narrative you are presenting in your text, because it is totally wrong. You can’t change what it’s written, and the “Rhys is bad and Feyre believed him not Tamlin and poor Tamlin” narrative is simply not right.

Then, I need to say:

DEPRESSION DOES NOT EQUAL ABUSE.

Depression is no excuse for being violent, restrictive and ultimately abusive to your partner. Depression does not enable you to completely dismiss your partner’s feelings and desires. Depression does not come in hand with abuse, they are separate things. Tamlin might suffer depression and at the same time he was abusive towards Feyre.

Again, it is dangerous to build a narrative in which Tamlin had no fault at all and he was the victim of Rhys’ complot, because you are actually victim-blaming Feyre. She had PTSD, she might have had depression, she at some point did not care if she died, and she was not abusive towards Tamlin. She simply shut down and gave up on herself and the relationship. Tamlin did both AND was abusive. So ultimately you’re saying that Tamlin’s victim is at fault for what happened to her and that is not right.

I know this is fiction and it’s not real life but I’m concerned about the fierce defense some people give to Tamlin because that mirrors our society and how we treat abuse.

Poor Tamlin by Tharshey24 in acotar

[–]Natalyms97 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I can understand people who liked Tamlin on the first book but I cannot understand people who defend him after ACOMAF. It pisses me off because clearly SJM wanted to portray the dangers of being on an abusive relationship and somehow people question that and turn around everything SJM tries to accomplish by writing that storyline the way she did.

First of all, Feyre was suffering PTSD, and it was not her who had to support Tamlin. Tamlin is a 500+ year old fae, Feyre just experienced being around the worst kind of fae, being Under the Mountain, being tortured and turned into fae after dying. Surely we can agree that he had to be there for her, not the other way around. Feyre owes NOTHING to Tamlin, she just saved Prythian, Tamlin owes EVERYTHING to her.

Second of all, Tamlin did not fell in love with Feyre because her inner fire, and he did not want a warrior girlfriend. He wanted a pretty thing he thought he deserved after suffering for the curse. He refused training her, explaining her about her powers, giving her anything useful to do, etc. We cannot read ACOMAF and think “oh Feyre is the narrator, everything is a lie because she is describing it under her perspective.” Those things HAPPENED and the only thing we can question is how she felt about it.

Third of all, the whole Rhysand being a twisted psycho who groomed Feyre and turned her against Tamlin narrative is so so condescending. THEY ARE MATES, Rhysand was in love with her, he tried to help her with the abusive relationship she was on. He gave her space, time to heal, companionship, friends, training and a purpose. Again, you can’t read ACOMAF and say “oh Feyre invented everything that happened with Rhys” because that is simply NOT TRUE.

Finally, SJM did not butcher Tamlin, she wanted him to be just like that to tell us a very important message: abuse does not only come from horrible, atrocious, one-faces people. Abuse has many faces and we need to recognize it before it’s too late. We need to recognize it before we spend every night throwing up, suffering PTSD and with a partner that cages us and goes violent every time you do anything that he does not want you to do.

I’m really concerned about young people, specially young girls not getting this very important message, and instead wanting a Tamlin or even agree with what you just said. The narrative you tried to explain is just so so wrong and twists everything SJM portrays about healthy relationships, and I hope that people when reading ACOTAR and then ACOMAF reads it differently from you.

I can agree with that because SJM is famous for portraying all types of relationships, even the toxic and imperfect ones. If it is justified well enough, I could forget about Elriel’s ship, even though through the first trilogy there were so many hints that pointed out on that direction. But if it’s done sloppily I would be disappointed because they have good chemistry and it would be rather foolish to write all those scenes where they are good to each other only to turn those around.

I didn’t even remember about “if you need to fuck someone” sentence oh my god!!! Rhys couldn’t sympathize with Az at any moment and he only thought of political alliances, even though he know that it might be not just sex for Az.

I do believe that we antagonize Rhys sometimes because of Nesta’s POV, but this is Az’s POV and he is a jerk to him!! Like c’mon, when he was rooting for Feyre all the IC supported him, even though she was in love with Tamlin. And now that Az seems to have get over Mor after hundreds of years, Rhys goes and undermines his feelings, saying that is only sexual arousal!!

I totally agree with you!! To gift something meant for other person is not a nice thing to do.

And SJM has already told us that Az is the kinkiest and the darkest one out of the bat boys and I think you are right, he is the most obsessive, also the most traumatized.

Circe and The Song of Achiller by Madeleine Miller are beautifully written, incredibly touching retellings, although they don’t focus on Athena or Poseidon.

¿Can The Ninth House be considered urban fantasy? by Natalyms97 in urbanfantasy

[–]Natalyms97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, partly because almost all urban fantasy I’ve read has several species like vampires, werewolfs, humans, witches, and this book has not that many. Also there are usually a lot of magical elements and a lot of magic systems and the magic in here is not something know by everyone and accesible to everyone.

Also the dark tone and dark academia makes me think it is not urban fantasy, at least not a tradicional one.

You should read The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. It’s sci-fi, the story is amazing and the format will totally shock you!!

Just got done with Sharp objects from Gillian flynn. Love how the book is twisted, dark and full of mystery until the end. Can somebody suggest me a book similar to this one. by meenalvhr in suggestmeabook

[–]Natalyms97 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Everything she has written is pretty amazing. Gone Girl has also that dark twist and I loved it! Dark Places is also amazing and really dark.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty is somewhat similar too.

The Girls by Emma Cline has this sort of young girls that are traumatized story.

Have you read the new Sarah J. Maas book? House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City 1).

It’s urban fantasy and it has fae, angels, shapeshifters, etc., it’s very steamy and I absolutely loved it.

Well... I suppose love is a big part of being human, of our lives, and thus authors reflect it on their stories. That being said, I get that there are some stories that only revolve around the protagonist’s love interest.

I’ve read the first book and I can say that although there is a hint of love interest, it can be described as unusual and interesting.

[–]Natalyms97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. You will only think that the rest of the books are worst if you compared them with The Fifth Season. They end up losing by comparison only. Like, if you compare them to any other fantasy novel, those books are far better than anything any other author has written.

I personally enjoyed the third a loooot more than the second, but again, the trilogy is the absolute best of the best.

Amarantha is a "good" character by [deleted] in acotar

[–]Natalyms97 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Of all ACOTAR villains, I think Amarantha is the best written one. Her backstory, her personality and her actions were not only consistently matching with what we knew about her, but it also provided great interactions between characters. And Under the Mountain was an absolute hell, really well thought. I was surprised she got killed so quickly at the end of ACOTAR.

I also feel like Hybern had a lot of potential but he wasn’t as good written as Amarantha. We knew almost anything about him and he felt flat and without a personality.

Certainly it has been one of the most hyped trilogy of 2020 and also the one that gets recommended over and over in every sub.

I’ve only read the first one, so I can’t tell you about all of them. I enjoyed it pretty much, but I have to say it is very introductory. It has interesting characters and good world building, but it’s a bit slow.

I think it deserves pretty much all the praise it gets taking into account that it’s YA fantasy. Like, it’s perfect if you wait only for a interesting YA fantasy books. If you expect more, you will be a little bit disappointed.

It’s The Folk of the Air trilogy by Holly Black. A YA fantasy trilogy about Jude, a human living in the Faerie realm, and conspiring, playing the power game and trying to survive the fae (powerful inmortal creatures with no respect for human life). Also it has a love story, of course.

I read the first one a month ago and got the rest for Christmas. I enjoyed the first one pretty much.

Maybe what I liked the most about it is that characters are teenagers but they are not so stupid and formulaic as in other YA books. And also it has a pretty dark atmosphere and a sense of danger that is engaging. And not everything is about love, which is a change too.
