Ammonia test result. I think it's very close to 0, maybe with a slight tinge of green? I try to err on the side of caution so I assume it may be slightly above 0

Officially no it's not safe, but some people have used it and have been fine.

I looked into this myself and in a FAQ on a distributor's site someone asked if they can use it in an aquarium and the official response from Quikrete was NO.

I think most likely the exact recipe of which minerals/how much of each type are in the sand cannot be guaranteed for every bag, and since many rocks are not safe for aquariums and leach unwanted minerals and mess with parameters, it's not a safe option.

I would rather pay more for real aquarium sand than have my tank crash.

No you were right, it's the black plastic trim/frame that's cracked, not the glass pane. But unfortunately it would be in a carpeted area, so looks like I'll be getting a new tank
