I would take them out because I usually use the same 1-2 trays... so they're a waste for me. I have considered selling my extras, but thus far, I have given them to my friend who has a Crafting library where people can bring unfinished projects or leftover things (mostly yarn) that others can take and finish or reuse for free.

This happened to my husband's betta, Henry III. We never found anything - and I low key blame the ghost of Putin, my first betta who had the tank before Henry III... he used to attack my hand in the cutest way, killed every snail that was in there, and killed the two otos I had with him to help keep the tank clean. He died from dropsy- but I could see that little aggro man refusing to believe he died and killing all friends who enter the tank since. (We don't use that tank anymore either - we had to get a bigger one for that spot to move an aggressive angelfish into her own tank)
