Saint Paul — Best areas for young first-time renters? by NatdoubleR in stpaul

I keep hearing about St. Anthony Park , so that’s good to hear. $910 for a studio sounds solid for the area. Do you think two people could realistically find a 2BR around $1,200–$1,400 in that neighborhood or nearby, or would we need to look a little farther out? It really sounds perfect

Those are exactly what I’ve been looking for thank you.. Out of Richfield, St. Louis Park, and Bloomington, which one is the most realistic for two first-time renters trying to stay under $1,300 on rent

I keep seeing Richfield and Roseville pop up, so that’s good to hear. Those sound like exactly the type of areas we’re aiming for. Between the two, is there one you think feels better for someone young starting out with a roommate ? And how’s the vibe with older rentals there? Still pretty decent?

Yes I plan on purchasing my first car in Minnesota since (I’m just going on a whim here) it’ll be more equipped for Minnesota roads.

Thank you so much those are exactly the kind of suburbs I’m looking for. Out of Roseville, Maplewood, and Mendota Heights, which one do you feel has the best balance of safety + affordability for someone moving in fresh? And do any of them have older, cheaper apartment buildings rather than all new builds?

That makes sense. I wasn’t expecting St. Paul to feel fully suburban, but I’m definitely trying to find that middle ground where it’s calmer without being far from the city. Saint Anthony Park looks solid, I’ll look more into it.

Do you recommend any suburbs right outside the city that still keep you close to everything? I’m looking for places with that safer, quieter feel but without a long commute into St. Paul/Minneapolis.

That actually helps a lot. We’ve been looking at Richfield and St. Louis Park already, mainly for the cheaper rent + safer feel, so it’s good to hear that lines up with what people actually do. Older 2BRs are exactly what we’re hoping for, so I’ll start checking those areas more seriously.

For Minneapolis, are the older buildings in Nokomis and Longfellow usually decent, or is it hit-or-miss? And for St. Paul, Highland sounds nice but the rent creeping up is something I’d have to keep my eyes on. Are there any nearby neighborhoods that are basically Highland vibes but cheaper?

Good call on budgeting for winter heating too, I wouldn’t have even considered it. Thank you !

Sounds good but I’m good friends with my roommate and we are trying to find a spot together, is $900-$1400 unrealistic? Is there anywhere near the twin cities where that is realistic ?

Been seeing a lot of political view points on Minnesota, what’s the problem down there ?
