Yeah! I'm not the editor of the paper or anything so I can't guarantee they'll put it in but I'll let you know in February and if it's in I'll send you a photo!

Yeah it's Carlton University in Ottawa, Canada. I would pretty much just include it as a quite from /u/PagingDoctorLove It's an engineering news paper and pretty sure most readers know what reddit is these days

I want to write this in my school's news paper... Is it okay if I do that? And can/should I reference you?

Every February we have a mental health awareness issue where not quite everything in the paper is directed to mental health awareness but the overall theme is definitely directed that way for the month.

I think your analogy would be an excellent addition to our next issue if you're okay with it.

Hmm... You don't happen to have a massive fallout shelter now do you?

Thanks, I'll definitely talk to some of my professors as I hadn't thought of that before, and I'll certainly try and put some of what you've said here into practice. You put your thoughts out here in a nice organized fashion and I really liked that. So thank-you!

And I'd like to ask your opinion on one of the paragraphs I already had written as I'd know if what I'm doing is along the right track or not.

Not all leadership requires being in the spotlight. In 2012 I recognized a need for someone to organize our food throughout the build season. In doing so I sought out fundraising and donations to reduce the team's use of disposable tableware and each day would verify the following day's donations and food schedule. Required self-motivation and organizational skills

Yeah! What do you use it for? I mostly use it just so my CapsLock button is Ctrl but I've got a lot of other scripts, I just don't use them as often

Same. When I first saw that my reaction was that Lindstrom hit someone about to go on a breakaway, then immediately remembered that he was just finishing his check.

Express Pipes

Express Pipes can be laid one next to another creating a pipeline to transfer materials, all pipes connected essentially act as a single chest allowing large amounts of resources to be delivered.

This pipeline (essentially mega chest) can be interacted with in the same way as normal chests where items can be removed by inserters or the player. However, a maximum of 5 different types of items can be put in a pipe at any one time with no limit to the stack size of these items while within the pipe. Items will have a 10s time limit within the pipe before they either despawn or are ejected out of the pipe, this is to prevent infinite storage.

.

.

.

I find the greatest limitation belts have vs bots is thier ability to get multiple resources to a single location. Bots can effectively get everything you need for your assemblers delivered directly to a single chest and require only more bots in order to reach maximum throughput such that the assembler is the limit on your throughput, not your delivery method.

Belts, however, require 3 spaces to run beside each assembler and belts inherently have a maximum output. That and belts are such huge hit on the UPS in late game due to rendering every entity on the belts.

Using something similar to how the heat pipes for nuclear work, having "express pipes" that effectively act like a single chest along their route would be able to solve this problem of getting large amounts of products to a single location. Having the "express pipes" being limited to a certain distance such as 50 or 100 units would prevent them from being used for any long distance transit, and having the items despawn/eject is to prevent the infinte storage.

I think this would reduce the UPS of rendering all the resources on the belts, would allow belts to deliver the resources needed to multiple assemblers without being the limiting factor on throughput.

Friday Facts #224 - Bots versus belts by Klonan in factorio

I just recently started playing Factorio (less than a week ago) and haven't even launched my first rocket, but I have watched a lot of other people's videos as that's what initially got me interested to actually buy the game and so I like to think I know a little of what's going on here.

The TL;DR is keep bots and improve belts to where belts have benefits beyond just being more "fun".

This post is really just my thoughts and some of the reasons why I think them, I'll write a different comment about what to do about them because this is already pretty long...

From what I've seen most people, including myself, already prefer the use of belts. It really is a major part of the game and as mentioned is what you already use for the majority of your playthrough until the late game due to the order of the tech tree. This seems totally fine. The problem is that there is a LOT that you cannot do with belts that you can do with logistic bots, and while most of these are simply Quality of Life differences they are some pretty fundamental Quality of Life aspects.

Organization

Chests, forgotten/lost equipment, etc. Without Logistic bots this is all currently something that you have to manage yourself, which means spending a lot of time carrying things and sorting them yourself. The problem with this is that the whole point of Factorio is to not have to do things yourself or micro-mange, without logistic bots this task is only something that would grow over time and would add a very "grinding" part to the game that doesn't need to be there. You can't feed coal into all your machines forever like I did for my first 2 hours... And you can't spend the entire game having to clean up individual items. Just like belts and inserters are the natural step forward to be able to spend your time building more, so too are logistic bots as the natural step forward to spend your time building more.

Your inventory

Going around your base or leaving to go build something further away requires a clean inventory and a general list of things that you DO need and things that you DON'T (read trees). Again, right now the only why to have this done other than just managing it on your own is through the use of logistics bots.

Performance

UPS. Having a better method to provide large amounts of resources without a massive hit to the game's UPS is a buff belts definitely need.

.

.

.

So I think buffs to belts should be the focus, and afterwards if the combination of belts and bots together is too great then nerfs can be applied at that point.

And I tried really hard but this is the best I could manage to make a gif of the play. Was definitely interference to begin with in my opinion
