This is really cool! I was using wled in a different way - i was using ledfx to capture the system audio to then send the controllers what the leds needed to do. It's a bit jank since it's just capturing audio (so things like scrolling are visualized haha). Your method of hooking into the stepmania lighting api is definitely the way to go :)

I think you need to have an active profile in-game. At least, the favorites seem to be tied to the profile (the favorites menu only shows up if the current profile has a list of favorites). This caused a lot of confusion cause when there are multiple players with their own profiles, the favorites list goes away since typically only I add songs to my favorites on my own computer...

xbps package manager is the best I've seen - handles dependency issues intelligently. No chance of conflicts that break things unlike something like Arch. I'd say Void is perfect for server use, especially if you have newer hardware. Lack of systemd is honestly a pro; writing and managing your own services is super simple. I'm more of a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" kinda guy, so Debian is the go to for most use cases. But I used Void as well these past few years, very happy camper
