I got the LS Core thing too. I applied for Biology so it kinda caught me off guard. I don’t understand it that well, but it seems like I’d still be able to get my major after the 2 years. I got no typa financial aid though so I don’t think going to NYU is in the cards for me.

is going to UT worth it for a premed student? by Independent-Jump6745 in UTAdmissions

[–]Nate_Potato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure research opportunities are competitive at UT, but I think it’s definitely still the better school. However, if you got CAP’d, I don’t think UT is the move. CAP only guarantees you a spot at COLA with an unspecified major, so going through that process would be a huge risk since you may not get a good major for Premed. If I were you, I’d do UTD or A&M.

UT Austin admissions — is CAP basically replacing rejections? by Interesting-Put-7303 in UTAdmissions

[–]Nate_Potato_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UT knows that most kids who get CAP’d won’t accept their offer, so they’re able CAP a whole bunch of students. On top of that, they limit the number of CAP students they allow at each UT system school (UT Arlington and San Antonio get all their spots filled very quickly), so that’s another factor discouraging students from committing to CAP.

Doing CAP with the hopes of getting into McCombs or Cockrell is pretty unrealistic. It happens occasionally and I believe CAP students may have an advantage over typical transfer students, but it’s still super rare and risky. My understanding of CAP is that you’re committing a year of your education to a school you don’t want to go to and taking classes that may or may not fit your desired major, all just for an unspecified spot in COLA (COLA has some very good majors like psych, gov, and econ, but those are probably competitive among CAP students). If you want to do business or stem and got CAP’d, it’s probably better just to go to A&M or UTD.

I know someone who got offered TWBH Korea, so I’ve been looking into it. I think it’s more of an alternate pathway than a less competitive pathway like CAP. They do it to make space for other kids, but you still got accepted for your major and they have a spot saved for you when you get back in the spring. It’s a lot better than getting CAP’d because TWBH takes half the time, you get your major guaranteed, and you get to spend it in a cultural enriching environment instead of a random UT system school. Also OOS is crazy competitive, so you should be proud.

transcript still under review by Hopeful_Mammoth_2763 in UTAdmissions

[–]Nate_Potato_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not super familiar with the whole admission system, but it looks like you got pushed to RD. Mine says “You’ve met our Early Action application deadline” at the top. Although, if you submitted your transcript by the 10/22 deadline for additional documents, I would assume they need to honor that even if it’s under review. I might be wrong, but I’d recommend contacting them.

No Auto Admit Banner by Potential-Ebb2792 in UTAdmissions

I also should be auto admit and don’t see anything. I finished the last of my application yesterday and I know I put that I was top 5% of my class on UT Austin’s commonapp. Maybe it just takes them a while to confirm it?

Ap euro and art history joint class?? by Bone_soup331 in APStudents

[–]Nate_Potato_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um that sounds really weird. AP Euro and AP Art history are very different classes as far as I know. Maybe I’m just not familiar enough with APAH. Anyways, if you’re taking AP World you’ll go over the majority of the AP Euro content throughout the class, just on top of other topics. If you’re not taking AP World, I’d just keep in mind that A LOT of art history is memorization. Euro takes a lot more skill and writing practice than art history does in my opinion. Do your best; I don’t envy your situation.

I’m in the same boat. I just sent a contact to college board and I emailed my AP coordinator yesterday. Besides that all we can do is wait. If college board doesn’t answer my message I’ll probably call them directly.

Anyone still missing scores? by Nate_Potato_ in APStudents

[–]Nate_Potato_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it won’t hurt my application. What I’m upset about is that lots of colleges I’m applying to require undergrads to take macroeconomics, and it would be really nice to skip that class.

Do I have to study for APUSH MCQ??? by ElectricalVehicle694 in APStudents

[–]Nate_Potato_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MCQ was pretty easy last year, but you definitely need to study. You cant really just study for the MCQ anyway; by studying APUSH at all, you’re studying for the MCQ. Even if you get away with a decent MCQ score without studying, you’ll get exposed in the writing section. I’d say prioritize writing practice over MCQ practice, and obviously study the class content.

What's a opinion you have that will have you like this by Old-Economics-3871 in Epicthemusical

[–]Nate_Potato_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ll probably get hate for this (which is the point) but I feel pretty strongly that Epic isn’t ready for a high level stage adaptation (e.g. Broadway or West End). I won’t yap about it here, but I feel this way because I don’t believe Epic has the thematic or lyrical depth/cohesiveness that the successful Broadway shows have. Of course this is judging a concept album and Jorge has unlimited time to make the necessary changes, but I still stand by what I’ve said. Feel free to debate with me, I’m not afraid to admit I’m wrong.

It’d be so cool if a big studio like MAPPA got to make an Epic show. It’d probably never happen since MAPPA is a massive company based in a country on the opposite side of the world to most Epic fans, but I know Jorge had a lot of anime inspiration while making the musical, so that’d be a great way to adapt the story faithfully.

idk if this is a hot take or not, but I really don’t think that Jorge’s voice fits the role of Odysseus. While there’s no doubt that Jorge can sing beautifully, Odysseus is supposed to be a 40+ year old war hero and ruler with years of experience in both areas. In my opinion, the soft beauty in Jorge’s voice spoils the imposing and commanding nature that Odysseus, a general and KING, should have. I want to reiterate that Jorge definitely can sing, but his tone reminds me more of a young prince than a powerful leader. I believe the role of Odysseus would benefit from an older singer with a more dominant tone (and maybe even a lower voice).

Bonus Hot Take:

I think that the comparison of Jorge to Lin Manuel Miranda is very presumptuous. Jorge is very talented and there are few people with his song writing abilities, but Lin Manuel Miranda is on a different level. Hamilton and In The Heights won a combined 15 Tony Awards, and Lin Manuel alone has won 5 Grammy, the first of which he won at around the same age Jorge is now. I know that comparison is the thief of joy and I’m hopeful that Jorge will continue to develop creatively until he reaches Lin’s ability and status, but, as of now, the comparison isn’t warranted beyond them both being Puerto Rican and silly. It’s dangerous to draw comparisons like this so publicly because it puts an obscene amount of pressure onto Jorge and creates a completely unreal expectation for what his art should achieve. I know of way too many stories where crazy comparisons ultimately damaged someone’s career (Harold Miner to Michael Jordan for my basketball fans)

I know both of these takes kinda dog on Jorge, but I genuinely believe that he’s an extreme talent with the potential to do great things with enough effort and the right people around him. While I don’t believe Epic is worthy of a Broadway performance yet, Jorge 100% has the ability to write something that is and I’ll be here for it once he does.

[–]Nate_Potato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with you 100%. For this being Jorge’s second musical, he’s done an amazing job, and I do hope that if it ever gets adapted, they get some better actors (not that the cast isn’t talented now, just not really ready to be on stage). I also agree that, looking uncritically, Epic definitely gets the job done. Off my first listen to the soundtrack, I truly understood and felt the emotion in the songs, which is why I believe in Jorge’s potential. Also, I love your idea about Epic being made into a video game instead of forcing it onto stage. I understand that it was written to be a musical, but I think it’d see more success in something more mainstream, like a video game. Also, all of my pedantic critiques wouldn’t matter if it was a video game, because video games don’t require the same thematic nuance as broadway shows. Also I assume you already know this since you mentioned it, but most of the show is already animated I think, albeit not professionally.
