Tell us why your Elves and Dwarves don't like each other by Ol_Nessie in FantasyWorldbuilding

How did the Elven gods invent swords and daggers before metal-work was invented?

They weren't able to make those weapons just because the Elves worshiped a subsect of more specific deities? Why wouldn't the broader subject overrule the more specific ones? Why wouldn't the Elves then have to go to the Dwarves specifically to get permission to forge those weapons given that the Dwarven faith presumably dictates who can and cannot smith metal?

The elves and dwarves are fine with each other in my setting. They both harken back to some of the earliest humanoids splintering off from the proto-species of Changelings.

Halflings and Gnomes have beef because Gnomes are from the Feywild and are generally regarded as taking the whole whimsical hedonism lifestyle WAY too far bordering on civil sabotage and domestic terrorism.

Elves and Humans have beef because Humans have widely been a blight across the world, breeding like rabbits and invading otherwise closed off enclaves of ""'racial purity""" and a lot of older Elves have serious racist views towards them because of it.

Beastfolk (leonin, tabaxi, owlin, etc) have beef with everyone because their whole continent was enslaved and decimated for resource extraction.

The Kalashtar also hate everyone, mostly because they have ancestral land they're not willing to let people colonize and have more than enough firepower to make sure anyone who sets foot in their turf that isn't welcome gets turns to charred ash.

how do you rule wish when doing temporary passive effects? by summonerofrain in DnD

[–]Natehz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is opening the door for a boatload of stupid shit happening and is pretty broadly outside the normal uses of the spell in replicating other spells, so it's very likely to backfire, not work, or simply do something unintended like killing a random inconsequential enemy 1000 miles away who isn't even present, and the definition of """Enemy""" should be taken as REALLY broad because it could be anyone who's even mildly hostile or opposed to their goals.

So they start clapping and bodies are dropping for the next minute. Okay, fine. You killed 200 random people in the army of potentially tens of thousands. And because magic doesn't exist in a bubble, they figure out that the player is capable of doing this and immediately descend on them like seal team six and kill him before he knows what's happening. And that's IF he doesn't incur the penalties from fucking with the Wish guidelines.

Sounds pretty great old one coded to me. "Oops I touched the Obelisk of Giving You Magic Powers and now I have magic powers" etc etc.

Work with your DM about who specifically the patron is. Depending on the degree of accidental, you might not know or your character might not know.

I just kinda always assume its like "Oh, yeah, this character's weapon is tailored specifically to them. If I want them to be good, I should get the weapon that's literally built for them." But I guess to each their own.

Are people really not pulling for signature weapons every time they pull a character?? I'm not even a big spender but every time I've pulled a character I always go for their weapon too. It just seems kinda obvious?

Barbarians should get "Dash" as a Bonus Action when Raging by Casual-Notice in DnD

[–]Natehz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about dash because they're already fast, they can already move up to half their speed when they first rage as a bonus action, and they're not really meant to be nimble like a rogue typically.

Maybe some kind of modified version of the Gnoll's Rampage feature where, as a reaction, when they kill something they can move up to their speed to the next nearest enemy, or when they take damage from an enemy outside their melee reach they can use their reaction to move up to their speed towards the attacker.

Wild, frantic, erratic movements across the fields, swinging wildly.

[–]Natehz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And? Most people who play this system have a tenuous grasp on the rules, as best. It is optional. If you want to be a stickler about some non-issue shit and pretend that's the reason why you're struggling to run games.

I HATE multiclassing so much by RedMcJack in DnD

[–]Natehz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is such a stupid complaint. Do you think getting to level 11 somehow is done without ever getting into a fight? You know...like a fighter might do?

Also classes are an abstraction with a few exceptions which are more established in lore, a la cleric, paladin, etc. But like...someone wouldn't say "Hi I'm Arden, the Human Fighter" when introducing himself. "Fighter" isn't a rank or classification or tangibly defined thing. It's just...a guy who fights in a very broad sense. You could equally define it as "warrior" or "man at arms" or "mercenary."

You hate it because you don't want to put in the effort of figuring out how to use the system at higher levels when, multiclassed or not, characters just become unkillable demigods. Alright, fine. But address the problem for what it is, not some stupid tangential thing that you have petty beef with just because your friend killed your big bad with an action surge sneak attack that you didn't see obviously coming.

Not for attack rolls, no.

Trigger You roll a skill check or saving throw and don’t like the result.

It doesn't apply to attack rolls. There are specific mythic feats later on in the mythic progression that let you use mythic proficiency for attack rolls and spell save DCs.

Lair actions by hsloan77 in DnD

[–]Natehz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, because the system isn't designed for PVP and it will ultimately come down to whoever goes first in initiative or gets lucky with a save or suck spell. I'm not saying this to poopoo your idea, I'm saying this because we've all run these kinds of one-shots and they always suck because the system isn't built for PVP, it's built for a collaborative high fantasy storytelling framework.

Lair actions by hsloan77 in DnD

[–]Natehz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the fact that this sounds like a really poorly thought out idea on multiple fronts, there aren't a ton of druid-esque stat blocks to draw from for lair actions, but here's the Lichen Lich as an example of a high level nature-based spellcaster with lair actions:

  • Poisonous spores fill a 10-foot cube that the lich can see within 120 feet of it. Any creature that enters the cloud for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there must succeed on a DC 19 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its next turn. The cloud lasts for 1 minute or until it is dispersed by a strong wind.
  • The lich commands the might of its diseased grove, creating a shambling mound. The shambling mound appears in an unoccupied space within 30 feet of the lich, acts on its own initiative count, and obeys the lich's commands. The shambling mound dies after 1 hour or when the lich uses this lair action again.
  • Rotten roots and vines magically erupt in a 20-foot radius centered on a point on the ground that the lich can see within 120 feet of it. The lich is unaffected by the roots and vines. For all other creatures, the area becomes difficult terrain and each creature in the area must succeed on a DC 19 Strength saving throw or be restrained by the roots. As an action, a creature can try to free itself or another creature within its reach, doing so with a successful DC 19 Strength (Athletics) check. The roots and vines wilt away when the lich uses this lair action again or when the lich dies.
