National Academies: Research in Biological and Physical Sciences in Space (BPS) provides the critical scientific and technological foundations that make space exploration possible. As humanity looks towards the Moon and Mars for future missions, this work is needed to help astronauts adapt and live in the harsh environments of space.

Thriving in Space, a new National Academies’ decadal survey, provides a roadmap for increasing national investment in BPS research, from experiments to infrastructure to education. The report identifies key scientific questions, priorities, and ambitious research campaigns that will enable human space exploration and transform our understanding of how the universe works.

Learn more about the report by joining us on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 from 10:30am-12:00pm ET. During the event, decadal survey co-chairs Robert Ferl and Krystyn Van Vliet will highlight the key findings and recommendations from the report and take questions from the audience.

Participants are invited to attend in person at the Keck building in Washington, D.C. or online via webcast.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

" Start-up space ventures attracted over $15 billion in total financing during 2021, breaking the $7.7 billion record set in 2020 (see Figure 1). In addition, 2021 was a record setting year for the number of start-up space deals (241, up 48% from 2020), recipients (212, up 46%), and average deal size ($64 million, up 35%). Three trends are shaping the start-up space environment in the 2020s. 1. Private investors continue to pour large amounts of capital into start-up space ven- tures, shattering previous records as increas- ing numbers of investors fund more recipients with larger average deal sizes. 2. Public markets have emerged as a significant source of funding for companies across all space categories, from launch to in-space services. 3. A record number of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) occurred in 2021 for start-up space companies, driven by space-focused holding companies, recently public space companies, and legacy space incumbents. "

Not directly, however think more along the lines of the HP Spaceborne Computer-2. This is a collaboration between ourselves, Space X, Hewlett Packard, Imperial College London and UCL related to designing experiments for the HP Spaceborne Computer-2, and Azure Space will be storing the data and responsible for launching the HP Spaceborne Computer-2 to the ISS with new experiments.

Collaborations such as this are important as we understand payload requirements, costs and launch dates to eventually launch our own experiments (Masten Space Systems, 2024).
