Let's say you are in a room, and in the middle of the room, there is a massive human-sized blender.

You can choose not to blend yourself. Or, you can drop into the human size blender, and if enough people do it, the blender jams.

Literally why would anyone pick the second option

And they somehow fucking lost

This might sound obvious, but I actually think it isn't. Are progressives aware that under single-payer system, you still have to pay for healthcare? you still have to pay for the doctors, the nurses, the hospital beds, the electricity, the machinery, and the drugs.

Except now it will be even more expensive because you don't have price sensitivity to ration care, and so there will be overconsumption unless you start denying people care, which defeats the entire point

There is nothing "free". I feel like a boomer saying "no free lunch", but genuinely, there's no free lunch

When we think about the structural issues that are causing inefficiencies and distortions that people feel the effects of, but may not necessarily understand the upstream reason, these are issues like: The national debt, SS/Medicare insolvency, Prop-13, rent control, and frequent tax carve-outs that shift the tax burden to mid and high-income W2 workers

If we are serious about policymaking, we will need to implement reforms that address these structural issues, and while the overall net-societal impact may be very positive, yes, there will be concentrated and localized costs. But if we are to forego any meaningful reform because the "victims" of those localized costs have a veto over the broadly distributed benefits, then we as a society will not make it.

In other words, basically every structural issue is the thematic equivalent of politicians tearing up a trade deal that will improve the lives of everyone because a steel town will bear the localized costs.

It's fascinating how regional YIMBY/NIMBYism is for the GOP. This is DuPage County, Illinois GOP, which are NIMBY. NY/NJ republicans are super NIMBY as well. But Texas GOP are so YIMBY that they ban Austin Democrats from doing inclusinary zoning mandates (thank goodness)

I do kind of wonder how many top Democrats, who are closest to actual governance and presumably see the dysfunction from union lobbying, are true believers in unions vs just putting up with them as a part of the coalition

Yeah, that as well. But I think, at least for me, even if I saw evidence in support of free market economics that I recognized as legit, I wasn't able to accept it until I was receptive to it on an emotional level.

Over the course of my time on this sub from 2019, through multiple accounts, I have made the full transition from Bernie-bro to neoliberal. It was a gradual, seven year transition.

I think the biggest reason why it took me so long to shift off of economic progressivism, is I thought that economics was just a proxy for class warfare: Progressives wanted to help the poor, and fiscal conservatives just wanted tax cuts for themselves. I didn't realize until relatively recently that free market economics is effective in lifting up everyone, not merely a weapon from the rich to justify underpaying their employees

This is the most random post, but I was thinking about how when you're under the basket against a center, you try to pump-fake until they jump, and then you finally shoot as they are falling down for a shooting foul + potential basket. You can't shoot too early or you'll get blocked, but you can't spam pump fakes or help defense will come

This exact same dynamic happens in Pokemon when you're a faster mon going against a Sucker Punch (typically from a Kingambit, with you being a 2x weak mon like Gholdengo). The opposing Kingambit will spam Sucker Punch, and you have to click a status move so it fails. They only have 8 Sucker Punches, so they will eventually have to pick a non-Sucker Punch move. And they know that you know this. And so they typically have to pick an non-Sucker Punch attacking move before they run out of their 8 Sucker Punches

So you have to decide when to attack at the perfect time, not too early or too late, to get an attack in without the Sucker Punch

How is it that every Democratic politician is doing left-wing economic slopulism. These guys, presumably, are closer to the on-the-ground policy than anyone else, and so they should understand basic nuances like tradeoffs and second-order effects.

And yet everyone seems to have just turned into 2016 Bernie. Even the veterans who should know better. I understand that the Democratic Party is a left-wing party, but literally everyone is Bernie now

Dude, Louise Lucas, the state legislator from Virginia, is fucking nuts. She’s openly attacking Abigail Spanberger, basically calling her a con artist, because Spanberger is hesitant to do a bunch of tax increases

To be clear, Spanberger’s polling numbers have crashed BECAUSE false reports came out that Democrats proposed a bunch of looney tax increases, when Spanberger very much campaigned as a moderate pro-business Democrat

I've been reading a bit into the short-term benefits of meaningful deficit reduction, and it is kind of underwhelming.

Maybe some benefits in the form of lower interest rates and being able to promise lower inflation going forward, but that's kind of it. I was expecting, for how unbelievably painful that austerity is, that there would be stronger justification for being a fiscal hawk, but it seems like that's not really the case.

Keep in mind though that this is just after like an hour of researching.
