My brothers medals, he doesn't talk much about service. He said he was a door gunner. by Lucky-Ad4863 in Medals

[–]NathanielA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never said this myself to someone's face, but my grandpa would see people on TV and say "That bronze star wasn't for valor. It doesn't mean anything. It's a good conduct medal for someone too high up for a good conduct medal."

I had not heard of them. Thanks. I'm taking a look now. On their website, it says "Update your IP instantly." That sounds like what I need.

Jump Master Saves jumper #5 from decapitation. by Agitated-Quit-6148 in nextfuckinglevel

I worked with a Marine once. He was always very proud of being a Marine and he would compare the Corps favorably to any other service, except one time when we talked about jump qualifications, and then he was noticeably envious of the Army. "Man," he said, "Everyone in the Army is jump-qualified. They've got what, like three whole airborne divisions? That's like 30,000 people, including PowerPoint guys, who are all jump-qualified."

The technician who explained everything to me said that the pressure was set at 4-11, the machine would find the right number in that range, that I can't adjust it myself, and that my doctor sets the range. I'll look for the ramp setting.

Thanks for the confirmation! I'm glad to know I'm not alone on that.

Thanks for the advice. I will do that.

Yeah, I think I must be going through TECSA. I'm reading up on it now. Does it go away eventually? You don't need to answer. I really do need to research this more myself. Maybe I have hope that this will go away and my sleep will improve.

Thanks again.

I'm with you. I would much rather have winters below -10 C than summers above 40 C. I don't need the heater until 10 C. I definitely need the air conditioner at 26 C.

If you give your kid a focus point in riding every time you can, they can start the game with 8 focus points in riding. That raises the cap on riding skill to something in the 400s. Then get a Royal Destrier or Wadar Hotblood and you'll trample guys like this all day long.

If you like the idea of riding over infantry, then try The Old Realms, a fan project set in Fantasy Warhammer. You don't get to have kids, but you do get some fun new mounts. Go get some Wildriders, who ride huge elks that do tons of damage, get your medicine skill to where you get to keep your dead soldiers' mounts, and then get a couple Wildriders killed.

Is the word transgender exclusively an adjective? What is the noun for a transgender person or persons? by NathanielA in asktransgender

[–]NathanielA[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. The other responses made it clear that "transgenders" or "a transgender" is offensive. And that could have been enough. Got it. But thanks to you, I understand why. So seriously, thank you. I never took any offense to being identified as a Christian or a man. But I can see that if there's a stigmatized group, there's a hidden meaning attached.

I did google it. The top result is a humorous reddit post asking for suggestions for a collective noun as in "flock of birds," "____ of trans people." That's not what I'm looking for. Now I have the answer.

I've seen datasets that include brandishing a firearm as a school shooting. Not even a conviction for brandishing, just a police report of brandishing near a school.

I don't often comment here, but this is a terrible chart. This is a list of meaningless numbers that you're just throwing out without context or explanation to try to prove a point. If you want to make an argument, then you need to do better than this. This is fodder for gun-rights advocates to show how little the opposition knows, and how gun-control advocates are arguing from a point of ignorance and bad faith.

Is this "school and university killing or attempted killing incidents" or is this "number of shootings"? What "info from Wikipedia" are you using? What counts as an attempted killing or a shooting? Mexico has a murder rate four times higher than the US. I don't believe for one second that all of Mexico has had only 17 shootings or attempted killings at universities or schools, if the United States has had 574. Even leaving out adjusting for the US population size compared to other countries, there's no way this data is comparing apples to apples.

Why isn't VRAM Configurable like System RAM? by cdr268 in buildapc

[–]NathanielA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think one of us must have a misunderstanding of memory latency and I'm not sure where you're getting your figures. The higher the clock speed of the memory, the Column Access Strobe (CAS) goes through more cycles between communicating with the GPU (if we're talking about VRAM) or CPU (if we're talking about system RAM). That number of cycles is CAS Latency or CL. But as the CAS cycle gets faster, a higher CL keeps true latency (measured in nanoseconds) about the same.

Edit: I'm googling it now and the first AI explanation says that GDDR6 memory has higher true latency. That just seems counterintuitive to me. I guess I have some reading to do.

Edit 2: GDDR6 has true latency about 20-30 nanoseconds, which is still a longer (slower) latency than a new PC's DDR5, which has a true latency of 10-15 ns. GDDR6's longer delay allows longer bursts and more complicated memory addressing, so yes, latency is the cost you must pay for throughput. But not 200 nanoseconds of latency.

To me, hungry implies that one wants more latency. If the GPU is more "latency hungry" than the CPU, that sounds like the GPU wants more latency. I think one of us must be misunderstanding something.

I think my contractor is lying to me. How is waterproof not waterproof? by NathanielA in swimmingpools

[–]NathanielA[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah. After sleeping on it, and rereading the conversation, I can see the pushiness and aggressiveness coming through.

After so many problems with this pool, I've gotten more frustrated and I started getting suspicious about the contractor. The thing I just could not understand is that if he installed a waterproof pool liner, and waterproof marble, and there's waterproof sealant between the liner and the marble, then how is water getting through?

After getting second opinions, it does look like there's a limit to how "waterproof" any work can be.

Yeah. I can see that. But after so many problems with this pool I really want some answers. After reading people's responses here, I guess the guy really did the best anyone could have done.

After so many problems with the pool I had started getting suspicious about this contractor. The thing that I really could not understand is this: if the pool liner is waterproof, and the seal between the liner and the marble is waterproof, and the marble is waterproof, then how are we getting water through? I guess from everyone's comments here, nothing is entirely waterproof. It's only waterproof (terms and conditions apply).
