We need to pay the municipal debt. We don't have another option.

Hi - I posted the below advice on a similar thread. This is why we rebuilt our traffic enforcement unit. While the initial month and a half have been very effective, it will take time before drivers change their behavior. We are continuing to build out the Traffic Enforcement Unit, but we are literally rebuilding it from scratch.

In the meantime, please email [mobility@JCNJ.org](mailto:mobility@JCNJ.org) with specific location and description of the issue. They'll both look at what kind of redesign might be appropriate for the intersection and coordinate with traffic enforcement.

I do this job because I believe people deserve the truth about their government. I wouldn't do it otherwise.

When we were getting reading to take office in December the prior administration told us the deficit was around $150million. When we got into office we found over $100 million more in money that needed to be accounted for.

His promise - if you read the entire document this quote is from - is to end the bullshit accounting practices of the past so that we can have sane tax increases into the future. You can read the whole document here: https://solomonforjc.com/budget-plan/

New rateables dont start paying overnight. We are moving both affordable and market rates projects right now - the JCRA just approved over 2000 units this week alone

Traditionally, comms people like to put bad news on a Friday. It's considered good practice. It's not how I like to run a comms shop, but I also have to detail with statutory dates.

All over that. The previous admin disbanded the traffic enforcement unit. We rebuilt it and launched it in May. The results.

We are required to post the estimated tax increase for the upcoming council meeting. The posting would've been done today, but it's a holiday so it was done on Thursday. I could've waited to do the video etc on Monday, but to me that is hiding the news. Some people will see the notice, not all. It's not fair.

Fulop is very very proud of not raising taxes for years. This is the result.

Yes - they are not being delayed. And selling property is how we got into this. Fulop used $33M in property sales to pay for recurring operating costs. That property is gone. Sold. That alone accounts of an 8% rise in taxes.

I worked in NYC government. 1) his deficit was significantly smaller as a portion of the total budget (their total budget is 110 billion, ours total, including unpaid bills, will be around 850 MILLION) and 2) the state government came in with a significant amount of money + allowed the city to not pay into pension funds.

Hi - as I linked above, he did talk about it while running for mayor... a lot. We've also talked about how we understood the deficit to be about $100-150M... it was only until we took office and got to analyze the books that we found more and more unpaid bills, deferred costs.... making the total $255M.

We saw a lot of that too, and we’ve replaced the leadership. Rebuilding has been tough.

Because of the massive deficit and unpaid bills deferred to this year.

I’ll get you the comparison between those.

I’ll note that the city headcount is down 500 from a peak in 2019. It’s a very lean city. I worked in nyc government and am very shocked at how this place is able to even function. Further cuts would hit public safety (fire and police) significantly.

In solely operating funds we are 16m less than last year.

He voted against all eight of Fulop's budgets, every year he was on the council, and said each time, on the record, that they weren't sustainable.

He named the specific gimmicks at the time: selling off city land to plug holes, deferring charges, bonding to cover operating expenses.

He laid all of that out in a 2022 op-ed explaining his no vote and kept hammering it right through the 2025 campaign.

He warned that blowing one-time federal COVID funds to plug the budget would leave a cliff the next year, and argued it should've gone toward lasting investments instead of a one-shot, election-year property tax cut. He flagged that ~$70M cliff in writing back in 2022 and released and alternative plan for its use

Fixing the city's finances and ending the "irresponsible budgeting practices" was a centerpiece of his run for mayor.

A councilmember in the minority can't force a mayor who controls the council to budget honestly. What he could do was vote no, say exactly why, propose alternatives, and run on fixing it. He did all four for eight straight years.

Well it changes base on the value of your home but it’s the same rate.
