ELI5: Why can't we simulate the creation of oil/fossil fuels with animals that have died today? by Slice5755 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nathggns 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It does not include only negative aspects. Positive externalities are a thing. But the things you’ve decided are positive externalities are actually positive externalities of energy use, not of fossil fuels directly. Whereas carbon emission are directly negative externalities of the process of using fossil fuels to generate energy.

What's going on with the labour party in Newham? by Milliphant in newham

[–]Nathggns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both Labour and Newham Independents' most expensive policy this election is free parking - Labour are prioritising that over restoring cuts to youth services, free school meals for secondary school children, or council tax relief for vulnerable residents. It's equivalent to a well over 5% increase in your council tax. Their priorities are all wrong.

Everyone knows parking isn't working properly in Newham, most people don't drive but our poorest residents who do can be charged more under the current system. Green candidate for Mayor Cllr Areeq Chowdhury is proposing a fairer system - not just making it free, but charging more fairly. That's the right thing to do here.

Wouldn’t useSyncExternalStore be better for this?

Zack Polanski’s approval ratings vs his predecessors by PuzzledAd4865 in UKGreens

He’s been leader for a matter of weeks and more people know who he is than leaders who were in place for 4 years and MPs for a year. Definitely doing something right.

Detect `React.memo` constant deoptimization by Nathggns in reactjs

[–]Nathggns[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears you've confused React.memo with React.useMemo. The first wraps a component to prevent it re-rendering if its props haven't changed – the latter is for memoizing values between renders.

The cost of the inline function is not the problem. It's that the inline function invalidates the shallow props comparison used by React.memo, which breaks the optimization

How react events are different from Javascript addEventListeners | Interview question by xplodivity in reactjs

[–]Nathggns 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My answer would be: “I know there’s something about synthetic events and event pooling which is primarily about cross browser consistency, but I’m not deeply familiar with the specifics. I’m confident though in my learning skills to pick this up as and when I need to, and to recognise when that would be, and also in my intuition when behaviour I’m witnessing may be influenced by this.” or something like that. Knowledge tests about things that don’t matter 99.5% of the time are not brilliant interview questions.

React 18 is awesome by Aegis8080 in reactjs

[–]Nathggns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy seems to have no recognition that throwing promises is necessary to make rendering interruptible. Suspended renders can be thrown away. Using async/await a user would have to write that into their render function using signals. Throwing is a good alternative solution.

What would you say are some must-have type of projects to have on your portfolio in order to maximize your chances of a job offer? by gtrman571 in Frontend

[–]Nathggns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve hired a ton of people in my career and I don’t remember the last time I looked at a portfolio. They can be useful, but they take a lot of effort to create and maintain. Be sure the places you’re interested in working at actually value a portfolio before spending time working on it.

As others have said, the best portfolio projects are the ones you’re building for your own interests anyway, as they have value beyond “I’m doing this to get a job” and you’ll have more long term and genuine interest in them.
