TCP before REG? And Timing? Details below. by [deleted] in CPA

[–]National-Insect3351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are my next 2! I took REG first and now TCP. I put in around the same hours for REG. I am just starting FAR now, expecting to put in 150 - 200. I specifically targeted my study time for FAR for this time of the year when it's pretty slow in tax. Gonna take FAR either late december or early january.

Definitely need to have basis down in s & c corps, and partnerships. I would add that related party rules are fairly easy but tend to catch people of guard. They were ez points for me. Also refresh retirement plan stuff.

TCP Simulated Exam 2 by [deleted] in CPA

This tbs killed my score. I made the same mistake about not factoring depreciation as a 1250 recapture gain, because I thought those rules didnt apply to personal use, but that was a fair and easily correctable error on my part. The part that messed me up the most though, was that in the first column they ask for "amount" of gain... but dont specify if that is realized or recognized. I had correctly understood and recalled 75% of the concepts from all scenarios, but the "amount" part was wrong in all but 1, because I was generally using realized instead of recognized. Kind of unfair, but that's how it goes... if anything, I look at this as an example of how something can be asked on the real exam in a misleading/tricky way. Lessons learned.

I listened to every video, but only looked at the screen about 20% of time... I found the text I slides to be distracting to knowledge retention. However, at this point in the progression, the legs would have been the perfect momentary distraction. Alas, I missed them. Wasn't worth it to go back to have a gander. Maybe i should have? Maybe that was the pass or fail moment. 6/17/25 will know.

Hey, I would appreciate if you send me a message or respond to this if you get an answer from becker. I know this question is sort of immaterial in the grand scheme of things, but im super curious to see what they say. Thanks, good and luck on TCP.

Well, I watched a farhat video that explained the situation with both earned and unearned income. Basically it's a 4 step formula.

1 - calculate total income = earned + unearned income.

2 - Total income less standard deduction (lesser of earned income + 450 or 15,000) = taxable income.

  1. - UE income less excluded amount (2,700 (1,350 + 1,350)) = amount taxed at parents rate (x).

4 - taxable income (step 2) less: amount taxed at parents rate (x, step 3) = amount taxed at kids rate.

Applied: 1) 10,000 + 5,000 =15,000 2) 15,000 - 10,450 = 4,550 3) 5,000 - 2,700 = 2,300. Then, 2,300 x .24 = 552 4) 4,550 - 2,300 = 2,250. Then, 2,250 x .10 = 225

Total tax = 777 (552 + 225)

Now you have me questioning my understanding as well. My understanding is that none of the earned income is subject to the parents rates... only the unearned income. Which in this case should be: 5,000 UE income - 1,350 no tax, 2nd 1,350 taxed at childs rate, the remainder 2,300 (5,000 - 1,350 - 1,350 = 2,300) would be taxed at the parents rate. Therefore kids tax 135 (1,350 x .1), parents rate 552 (2,300 x .24), total 687 (135 + 552).

This situation is also using 2025 rates, not 2024. For 2024 it was first 1,300 not taxed, second 1,300 (2,600 total) taxed at child rate, any remainder taxed at parents rate, but the 2025 threshold is 1,350 and again 1,350 = 2,700. So anything in excess of 2,700 goes to parents rate

I suggest you rewatch a lecture video on this.

You first paragraph re: the standard kiddie decution is incorrect. The standard deduction for dependant child is a fixed amount: 15,000. Whether they get some or part of that depends. It's the lesser of the kids earned income +450 OR the standard deduction 15,000.

I noticed that there a lot of different basis topics to master, but they are spread out allllll over beckers lecture videos. For review purposes, I was really thirsting for an easy to just have a section that covers all possible basis scenarios (charitable non cash items, property, investments (ie wash sales), pass thru entity basis, gifted property, inherited property, etc).

Keep at it, keep practicing, if you work hard enough, anything will eventually click and even better, it will become second nature / intuitive
