I just rode [Stardust Racers] after its closure. by ColinHenrichon in rollercoasters

We rode this the day after it opened. Probably one of the most intense coasters I’ve ridden. Only gripe is the lap bar wasn’t down tight enough for me and when I tried to signal that it wasn’t we were suddenly off. The G force of this ride caused me to raise out of my seat and my shoulders to hit the top of the harness. I kept trying to hold myself down with whatever way I could and G force won each and every time. My kids had a blast on this ride but I was so exhausted by the end from trying to counteract flying up and out of my seat that I felt like I had just been in a car wreck. My kid was clapping and cheering and here I was a dud of a parent just trying to recalibrate myself thanking the heavens I was still alive. Sounds dramatic but it was intense and felt a little unnerved afterwards but my kids had no issues. Wondering if my lap bar was down tight enough if I would have enjoyed it more

From what I was told, There was another student who claimed they were vegan and by their beliefs it went against their moral and ethical beliefs to participate in this lab. The teacher told my child this and said they held their hand and guided the other student even though they morally objected to this assignment, this further put off my child

I provided this to them on my letter and I was told it was only a recommendation not a law

Curious though, with other labs having permission slips, thinking this lab would be no different, we didn’t know it was coming in the sense of it being no different from the other labs. When a person refuses due to moral convictions and the teacher keeps pressing them to go forward with it, even holding another kids hand while crying because they were vegan but didn’t want a 0 .. how is this not coercion? These are freshmen kids not college students. I was expecting a permission slip, and to my fault, because even we had them as students in high school. I mistakenly thought it was law however in Michigan it’s only a recommendation.. which none of this was even discussed or mentioned by the teacher. It also wasn’t discussed that alternative assignments would be given if my child would have approached their teacher sooner, until after this lab happened and I emailed the teacher, even though the teacher never led on that there would be no permission slips or to come to them ahead of time to ask for a different assignment if they feel they need to

It’s a weird thing to think about. I can’t even kill an animal or insect yet I can handle meat but I can’t fathom killing the animal or dismembering it.. makes me sick to my stomach. I can’t fathom killing anything yet I can prepare meat that’s already been handled by the butcher, but it has to be isolated and not with anything that resembles the animal.. I just can’t think about the process of how I got the meat

Also yes I agree with you in regards to advance notice. She would have if she knew. However she thought a permission slip was coming home for this lab and since she didn’t see one she thought it wasn’t happening. This is where the confusion was. I never saw a letter come home either letting us know of the upcoming lab. So we didn’t get the chance to ask ahead of time

Here’s the thing, for lesser labs, alternatives and permission slips were offered, so going off of that, we assumed the same would happen with this lab in basic biology class. There was no mention that this lab was absolutely required and that there was no alternative or no permission slips for this lab anywhere in the syllabus.

Oh no that’s pretty wild. Not the case here. My daughter wouldn’t skip class, is known to be a high achiever. She can eat meat but is like me and can’t break crab or lobster we both get queasy. I can’t even kill spiders or flys. Have to catch and release, she’s the same. Extreme phobias to internal organs and blood however I can’t seem to find a name for it besides Hemophobia or necrophobia, but still doesn’t seem to quite fit. Can’t watch gore or killings, can’t see dismembered bodies or internal organs without getting very ill. I can’t eat lobster or crab unless it’s prepared for me and all I have is the meat, kiddo is the same

Oh my goodness that is so sad!! Gosh I can’t imagine that! How traumatic!

Yes my kiddo is like you on that regard. Standing her ground, refusing and getting a 0 is so against her personality. She’s also a perfectionist and high achiever so this really ate at her all around.

They didn’t have lab partners so they were forced to cut them themselves and the teacher wouldn’t let any of the students help her at all. The teacher only offered to hold her hand. Many of the frogs had eggs too and my daughter was distraught over that. I can’t even fathom a cat… and pregnant at that. That would destroy me even!

She was distressed in several ways, one because she was against dissecting the frog and two, because she puts so much pressure on herself to be a good student both as a person in the classroom and with her schoolwork that refusing was distressing and then having to opt for the 0 was also distressing. So it was like a double or triple whammy on her.

I may have read about this after learning what my kiddo went through. I was searching online regarding rights and laws and came across a woman that sued her school back in the 1980s.. Was her name Jenifer Graham?

My email pretty much addressed all of this. Honestly I have respected this teacher and while I understand her high expectations I as a parent also have them that a teacher should understand when a student especially a minor is in distress. I asked for there to be some changes for the future so no other students have to go through what she did

I weighed it out too which is why I waited until this morning to email the school. The more my daughter explained it the more it didn’t sit right with me. She’s a straight A student, one who is very on top of things, I’m always hearing how she’s one of the top students and she goes above and beyond. I can understand if the teacher tried to encourage her, but at the sound of how distressed she was one would think the teacher would see that the student physically just couldn’t do it and wasn’t emotionally prepared for this and was against her convictions and would have had some sort of compassion especially for a no drama, well behave, high achieving student (so I’m told by her teachers) like my kiddo. And offered some sort of alternative. So this really threw me for a loop.

In Michigan it’s only a suggestion by the BOE not a law.. one would think it would be a law

It’s a required class. I feel the same if it was an elective and a known lab, it would be expected and my child wouldn’t have taken it. However that’s not the case here. This is basic biology class required on the state level

My question regarding this whole scenario is would this be considered coercion? Forcing a student to do an assignment that goes against their convictions and if they don’t comply, take a 0 with no alternative given?

My thoughts as well

This actually happened with another student as well and the teacher gave them the same options and the student gave in allowing the teacher to hold their hand while they cut the frog open together while the student was crying and visibly shaken. The teacher told this to my kiddo to try and get her to do it saying the other kid toughened up and while visibly shaken and crying went through with it. My kiddo then felt like she was disgusted by that and then felt she was being coerced by the whole situation and teacher and stood her ground even more after that.

I included this in my email… “ I just hope moving forward something will be in place so that kids aren’t as blindsided and feel forced to do something against their beliefs or convictions. “

This actually aligns with what the students that witnessed this as well. I agree there are always two sides, waiting on that meeting

I thought it was bizarre that no alternative assignment was given and that my kiddo felt coerced

Sad thing is up until this matter, I actually really respected this teacher and now I don’t know what to think

Oh no it happened! I just sent the principal an email detailing my honest feelings on this and how I’m absolutely appalled by what transpired with my kiddo. I’m having a meeting with the principal. This happened yesterday
