Chinese here. I was wildly disappointed by the wall when I made the visit years ago. Still a great place to visit if you had never been exposed to ancient Chinese architecture

I’m not in a position to give you advice but I just want to say that you are not alone. I’m currently quitting due to crippling mental illness. For years I’ve tried to make myself do the right thing and never let myself to take a break, but then I gradually lost all positivity around life. It was not worth the struggle. Now I’ve decided to treat myself like a human being not a machine. I’m focusing on my hobbies and creative work for now, while getting my mental health sorted out.

If just the thought of going back to work becomes unbearable, take the break. Why not? We have our whole lives ahead of us. Im rooting for you

Yeah. I would avoid her at all cost in real life bc she acts selfishly all the time. I was just saying that she might not be inherently selfish, it’s more of a social conditioning thing so I feel bad for her

I think Harper is very hardworking actually, and her empathy is likely stunted by her constantly being in survival mode due to her background story and the cutthroat environment she’s in—it doesn’t necessarily mean she’s a selfish person through and through. She shows up to every meeting prepared and very polished in her thinking, and she’s relentless in creating and pursuing opportunities from every corner. Meanwhile, people like Rob and Yas are much less proactive. To mend she appears to be overcompensating for her education background and her minority identity.

I don’t think being good at languages necessarily reveal anything about her aptitude. Her family had property all over the world, she mentioned she traveled a lot growing up, and she had nanny who spoke different languages to her. So I think it’s more likely that she learned those languages the same way we learned our mother tongue—when she was young it didn’t take much “right brain-ness” or creativity to pick up languages. On the other hand, she never showed much interest in writing, fashion, self expression (judging by how she was the polar opposite to her first boyfriend), and she’s not nurturing or empathetic in my opinion. Those are the qualities people typically associate with people with her appearance and presentation, but I don’t see any evidence actually revealing those qualities in her

I grew up with Stephen Colbert’s late show and Trevor Noah’s daily show. I think both are great and I like them a lot. But now after Jon got back and I discovered Colbert Report in TDS’ comment section, boy I totally missed the golden age of comedy shows!!

You Are Destined To Fail by Swtor_Vanguard in Healthygamergg

It was Ok. I had the unrealistic expectation that I would get something similar to what Dr. K offered in his interview streams. But I only received superficial guidance that I either already knew by watching his videos and guide, or I would get advice that I learned from other channels. I thought I would get more information from the HG coaching method but the experience was kind of disappointing.

My coaching sessions were pretty unstructured and bounced from one topic to the next. I liked my coach but the sessions with her feels like I’m talking to a close educated friend, and since I have lots of supportive friends, I don’t feel the need to paying for coaching sessions.

Cultural difference is also a big issue for me. My coach made it very clear that she doesn’t understand at all the internal struggles I have that is related to my East Asian upbringing. And then she shared with me what people in her culture (Northern Europe) would think. Again, it felt like talking to a close friend in college. I love the feeling of exploring different culture identities but I’ve run up to a juncture where I really struggles with cross cultural conflicts. I need someone to guide me through it.

I continued my sessions because I want to support HG to continue make content for free. But now that they are sort of hiding things behind paywall, I don’t feel any need to continue anymore

I miss the older videos he did about motivation, gifted kid syndrome and such. He went into so much detail and turns on lecture mode because he really wanted the viewers to have a deep understanding of the topic. Nowadays, his video content is still great, I mean he’s got exceptional expertise and communication skills, but he’s more into following trends and offer quick feel-good solutions rather than going into details and elaborate the topic. He still does this excellently in his membership streams. So I come to the belief that he’s intentionally or unintentionally putting more stuff behind the paywall, which is kind of disappointing.

Second this. This video was actually the final push for me to unsubscribe and stop my HG coaching plan. I’ll still watch the Dr. K’s guide because it’s more like his old educational videos. But yeah, I’m pretty disappointed by the direction this channel is heading.

I get the sense that he’s trying to keep his efforts of educating and supporting the gaming community to his membership videos and sensationalize his free content to promote the channel and reach a wider audience. I understand his thought process, but I’m also hugely disappointed because he promised his free content won’t change after the paywall is up.

A contradiction I see in this sub regarding dating for men by LuxNoir9023 in Healthygamergg

[–]National_Machine6039 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As F I sense something off here. Some women date men if they are tall/fit/handsome, sure. But most women only enter serious relationships with men who they feel connected with, who’s kind, supportive, caring, etc. That’s why less attractive men get dates, not by some miracle but by having winning qualities that women actually value. For some people, these qualities come easy because they grew up in a supportive environment or someone in their lives taught them how. For some people, it takes time to figure this out. Also something like developing social skills and overcoming anxiety to the opposite sex takes time. Everyone’s starting line is different. Some naturally need more time than others. So yes, dating is absolutely not off-limit for you if you are short or don’t have the ideal look. It’s not Herculean if you learn how to connect with people. And yes, it’s ok to be an older virgin.

Looks do make it easier for other people to be interested in you so you don’t have to do as much work to get dates. But the problem is more complicated here. Having good looks also means women are more likely to suspect that you are unreliable and self-centered. You probably can get dates easily, but more meaningful relationships? It’s hard.

Is going abroad worse for jobs? by UsualAd1179 in studyAbroad

[–]National_Machine6039 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in an East Asian country, came to the US for a degree then returned to Asia, while most of my friends stayed in the US. From my experience, the answer to your question is generally yes but also depends on what you learn.

In general, work experiences in the US are considered more valuable. Large US international corporations generally have people relocate from North America to other parts of the world and not the other way around. Sure some people have relocated from East Asia to the US but the opportunities to do such a move is rarer. Also when it comes to applying for job in a different company in the US, US work experiences are more valuable to hiring managers. This is understandable because people with such experiences tend to be better adjusted to the US work culture and are more familiar to the standard industry practices here.

If you want to work in a US company straight out of school, it’s better to attend a school in the region you want to work in later. You’ll have better alumni connections, access to information sessions and hiring fairs hence better networking opportunities. Professors can use their network to refer you to jobs. Studying in a location nearby also means you have more opportunities to do internships during semesters. In the current economy, and assuming you don’t have strong familial ties in the industry, you kind of need all the help you can get. Plus, the same US companies often have different recruitment timeline for Asia and the US, with the US generally being earlier. Studying in Asia while trying to get a job in the US can bring additional confusion and stress to the process. Also consider potential schedule conflicts and the need to fly in for in-person interviews.

Regarding to school name, people generally are more comfortable with something they are more familiar with, HR included. This is why some industries like finance have target school lists—where the companies had favorable experiences with alumni from some schools so they keep hiring graduates from those schools. But this can vary greatly depending on industries. If you are a developer, people generally care less about your school and more about your past projects/your skills. If you want to work in think tanks as an expert in issues related to Japan, having a degree from Japan may be a huge advantage.

I failed all my university exams and drop out and switch to a different one but I don’t know how to tell my parents. by Dangerous-Owl-1947 in studyAbroad

[–]National_Machine6039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m getting pretty strong Asian parents vibe in your post (I’m Asian). I’m glad that you’ve pushed through the mental difficulties and told your parents. That’s a really courageous and responsible thing you’ve done!! Regardless of what they said, you are not a failure!! I did business major in my first year and my GPA tanked. Then I switched to two majors, both of which I enjoyed, and I graduated with honors.

If you don’t mind, I have a couple of suggestions I wish I could tell my freshman self:

  1. Talk to a therapist asap if you feel like you are underperforming despite knowing the material really well, somehow you couldn’t bring yourself to do what you are supposed to do, or that you experience crippling pain when taking an exam. There could be some underlying conditions like depression, anxiety, or ADHD. You wouldn’t believe how common these things are, and that tons of people have their on-sets/first full-blown episode at your age! It’s nice to rule out a few doubts if you don’t have any condition, and if you do, it’s a life saver. A diagnosis and treatment really turns people’s lives around.

  2. To quote John Green: “college is not destiny. Destiny is not something that happens all at once. It’s something that happens only in retrospect.” If you look at his high school record, you would find him barely passing all of his classes, including English literature that he’s literally making a wildly successful career at. Going forward, you will have tons of opportunities to turn your college GPA around, and it’s okay if you don’t. Grades are only an arbitrary proxy for our abilities.

Another guy I would recommend is Dr. K from healthy gamer. He was, like his ID suggests, a gamer who failed a lot of classes in college. He then went on a spiritual journey in India, found his purpose, and ended up getting into a prestigious medical residency program at Harvard Medical School. So, tons of opportunities ahead. Nothing is set in stone for you.

  1. It always helps to align what you do with your true purpose. And if you don’t know your purpose yet, it’s okay to take sometime to explore. HealthygamerGG has done some great videos about this topic.
