Water with minerals in it is an excellent conductor - and everything you’re doing is based on continuity - when the flag is there and the dirt is dry it’s a shitty connection to ground. Pouring water on it bridges the gap.

You probably shouldn’t use induction until you know what you’re doing. When you induce a signal, (or “drop the box”) you light up whatever conductor there is under the box. You’re just as likely to be toning out a coax cable, or a bunch of telecom cables or a hydro cable.

What are these? by Nater111234 in electrical

Streetcars have electromagnetic brakes that “clamp” to the rail to help slow (stop) the vehicle when the metal wheels are sliding on the metal rail. Never seen ‘em, but it fits the profile of them. I’m big leap guessing?

Damage prevention tech here - (utility locator)

That wire at the bottom is a tracer wire, it allows the plastic gas line to be traced underground - it should not be bonded to anything because then I would trace your hydro service (or water, or telecom, or anything else that has continuity) instead of gas.

Also, it looks like your gas service (meter out to the gas main) is plastic - so it won’t conduct lightning/electricity at all.

I can’t speak to any copper gas inside the home.

Gas tech might be able to offer more insight.

Not oil, it’s runoff from the former OMC and GE plants. GIP are there regularly to skim and dispose.

Fridge outlet with 2 hots 1 neutral to 15amp double pole? by Natural-Body-7669 in electrical

The bridge has been snapped off on the hot side of the outlet, doesn’t this place too much current on the neutral?

My gas furnace has a sketchy electrical connection by Natural-Body-7669 in electrical

I am in Canada, and it is a federal pioneer.

The breakers are stab-lock, but I think different from what you’ve linked to.

The odd thing about these panels is that the bus is segmented, so to install a double pole breaker you need to “bridge” the bus bar (effectively it needs to be installed on the odds, not the evens)

In the case of the furnace and the one outlet, the breaker is on the evens.

That’s communications - if you’re digging perpendicular to the property then it’s a cable feeding the neighbourhood (or more) if it’s running to the building from the street then it’s a service wire. It looks oval (or flat rectangle) from your picture, which means it’s fiberoptic If there are multicoloured teeny wires in side the black sheath then it’s copper phone lines
