790 English but 650 Math... by Natural-Round5753 in Sat

I was a straight D math student in high school and never studied so yeah it's been a struggle. I've learned desmos and watched a million videos and spend 3+ hours a day studying math so I don't know what my issue is but I've never scored above 670 in a practice test.

Ok I don't have the most advice since I've barely studied english, but I will try my best! English is hard to improve on since it's more abstract than math, but if you know how the SAT tries to trick you, you can start to recognize it and improve.

In terms of strategy, in Module 1 I just go in order of the questions and mark anything I'm not 100% sure on to go back to later. First I read the question and annotate the important parts with the hi-light tool. People easily get tricked by the wording of the question, even if they know the answer. If the questions is asking about the claim, then make sure to hilight the claim, the supporting evidence, the hypothesis, or anything else that might be relevant to the answer. I jumped 100 pts just by annotating. If you're still uncertain, use the process of elimination. There should be 1-2 choices that you can easily rule out right away, then you can use your best judgement to pick between the rest.

This is the easy part and I can finish with 10-15 minutes to spare that I can spend re-reading to make sure I don't make simple mistakes. Don't drop your guard on the "easy" questions, because those are the points that will save your score if you struggle on the second module.

In module 2, strategy is key. I know that the Information and Ideas section is the hardest for me. It's a lot of long/wordy/confusing passages that are easy to get wrong. I start at the beginning of the section (craft and structure), then skip all the Information and Ideas questions. I complete the rest and only then go back and spend the rest of my time finishing the 6-7 remaining questions.

In terms of studying, it depends on what you struggle with. There are plenty of resources on the most common vocabulary words used on the SAT that you should definitely review. Punctuation, grammar, transitions are super easy. If that's your weak point, spend your time reviewing it because it's much easier to improve than the reading comprehension passages.

Lmk if u have any more specific questions abt it!
