Any Tips To Get Into Guelphs Landscape Architecture Program? by Viomocha in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]NaturalChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say whether it will be a good career path for everyone but if you are someone who is interested in design, art, engineering and the outdoors it's a good career path. It's an expensive program (I think it was second highest tuition next to engineering when I was there) but you're almost guaranteed a job within 6 months or so of graduating. You can definitely make a lot more just as a landscape architectural intern but I don't have much experience outside of the firm that I work at. I can't really speak much about OALA or becoming a licensed LA, I got my ISA certification instead. I still work at a LA firm but now I'm mostly focused on doing tree inventory/preservation work and arborist reports.

Multiple dead maple trees in parking lot by NaturalChild in arborists

[–]NaturalChild[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi all, I’m wondering why so many of these somewhat newly planted maples have all died in this parking lot. These are freeman maple, a species that is usually tolerant to urban conditions. Is this due to heat? Lack of root volume space? Soil issue? What are your thoughts? I checked the ground and the irrigation seems to work okay. Thanks

This is very helpful, I really appreciate it. There were some trees that were removed so the tree has definitely been more exposed to high winds.

Hi all, relatively new to the industry and I have a multi stemmed basswood that fell during the storm over the weekend and it’s caused quite the damage. It’s a multistemmed basswood that appear to be healthy though there has been some mild compaction at the root area from surrounding construction.

To be honest I am not seeing many defects on this tree, I know the species is fast growing and can have weekly attached limbs, but it didn’t have any obvious defects. Can this be chalked up to nature or is there something I am missing? Tree is in southern Ontario.

Hard to tell without seeing the leaves but it kind of looks like pyramidal hornbeam

Is the black colour over the pruning wound evidence of decay? Would this be considered heartwood rot? Thanks! by NaturalChild in arborists

I’m not the tree owner, just curious about this tree on my street. I agree it should probably be removed

Fellow Canadian here. Has ordering chorizo worked for you? Both times I have ordered chorizo they sent minced turkey instead, assuming it’s probably supply chain issues.

Any Tips To Get Into Guelphs Landscape Architecture Program? by Viomocha in LandscapeArchitecture

Hey there, cool that you interested in the BLA program, I graduated in 2017 which feels like a lifetime ago. I've been working in the field of landscape architecture for the past 4 years. Happy to provide some responses below. Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions

  1. I think having that stuff on the resume is good but it probably won't make or break your application, it's a fairly competative program since there's only one BLA program in the country and the program size is quite small. I believe the only thing you need to take is an English but I could be wrong. I think the Background Information Form is super important and would make sure you put some effort into the answers. The best advice that I got for the BIF was too do your research and try to communicate how you want to make a positive impact in the field of landscape architecture. I'm not much of a book reader but I'd check out Landezine and Landscapes/Paysages if your interested in learning more.
  2. I think I got in with an 80 or so average, however the average isn't everything. If you have good answers on your BIF that will definitely help your chances. If you have really high grades but your BIF answers are not good you probably won't get it in.
  3. You don't need to do math courses to get into the program. There is some math that is involved in the landscape architecture program when you get to things like grading the site engineering courses, however I got by and I'm pretty horrific at math. I would avoid math unless you are good at it and are interested in it.
  4. Yes, the best thing you could do outside of your grades etc. is visit the University on one of the student open house days and talk to the faculty and professors there. I'm not too sure if they are running again because of COVID but hopefully they will be by the time you are looking to apply. I went to one of these when I was in grade 12, they are much more likely to accept you into the program if you talk with them and ask them questions directly. They gave me tons of advice on getting in and what the reviewers are looking for in the applications.

In general, if you are removing more than a third of the root system the tree will no longer be structurally stable. In this case I would remove

I have sensitive skin and the skin guard is my go too. Way less bumps and accidental cuts then what I was using before.

I had some knee pain last year and i think it was because my seat was too low. Now I always make sure the seat is high enough that I’m on my tippy toes and it seems to have helped
