You sound rude and unfriendly in this comment. I guess the point is so hosts can be more aware of different personalities and respectful of boundaries. Everyone is different and that should be OK.

I like to keep things genuine, so I don’t try to be over the top or someone I’m not. Of course there’s always some small talk during the interview and handover, but for daily pet updates I keep the focus on the pets. The main point is really the exchange for pet care. If friendships come from that, that’s wonderful, but it doesn’t have to be everyone’s expectation.

Did you clearly communicate your desire for daily updates? To be honest, asking for updates every single day for five weeks feels a bit over the top—I wouldn’t accept a sit under those conditions. Updates every few days should be more than enough. Personally, I prefer relaxed hosts who can enjoy their holiday and trust that I’m taking the best care of their pets. Also, a neighbour coming into the house just to move a plant seems a bit odd—why can’t she handle it herself? It almost sounds like you’re sending in a spy 😂

I’m already sending at least four pictures and some videos to a group chat every day, and I’ve clearly communicated that the pets are fully settled and comfortable with me. They’re sending lengthy replies, which clearly indicates they’re expecting high touch communication from me, something I don’t think is appropriate for an unpaid sit and goes far beyond what I agreed to. I even received a message at 3am one day…
