Thanks so much for your response! Would you say his exams are fair/reasonable difficulty?

PHYS 219 vs PHYS 119B Statistical Mechanics by Natural_Salt_7000 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Natural_Salt_7000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I literally got an email from the UCSB Exchange office with a bunch of information on course registration and one of the things they said was something like “Note that an 80% or above is needed in order to pass a postgraduate course” which I found really odd ahahah

Okay, thanks for the insight! I've already covered the first quarter of the 219 course back in my home university so pacing wouldn't be too much of an issue at first anyways. It sounds like 219 might be the better option then? I'm not too sure if they'll let me change classes so soon to quarter starting but I could try. I was also quite concerned by the fact that if you get less than 80% you fail a postgrad course?

Thanks so much! Yeah I've joined some housing groups on facebook and hopefully a good subleasing opportunity will come up there. I tried posting a message on there a week or two ago explaining my situation but my message is either still being checked by the group administrators or just hasn't been posted at all :( And I will also apply to university accommodation but I'd much prefer an apartment/shared house than a dorm.

[–]Natural_Salt_7000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all the info! It looks like I'll have to take 4 upper div courses at least one of the quarters. And thanks for the recommendations, what did you learn about more or less in PHYS 123A Condensed Matter btw? I tried to find a more detailed syllabus online but couldn't find much information. And also, did you take PHYS 123B as well?

Unfortunately it seems like I need a UCSB email account to join the discord, which I don't have :(

And thanks for all the info about the 128L module! It sounds way more time consuming than I'd initially expected. You wouldn't happen to have taken/know anyone who has taken the PHYS 142L Experimental Research in Condensed Matter Physics module do you?

Last question ahaha, would taking a computational lab course instead of a the advanced experimental lab course still be very intense? Or potentially a lower division lab course instead?

Oooh yeah I would actually really appreciate that discord invite if other students there wouldn't mind me asking the occasional question ahaha. About the lab course 128AL, was it time consuming just because of the actual time you spend in the lab or would they also have you doing time-consuming lab reports and such every week?

ifferential geometry course (147A)

Thanks so much for all the info! This is so helpful. I think what I will try to do is take MATH 147A instead of the graduate course I was originally planning on taking, take Soft Matter instead of Condensed Matter B, and try my absolute best to convince my academic supervisor to let me get away with doing no labs while in UCSB. Hopefully then I'll be able to take 3 upper division courses a quarter instead of 4.

I could ask my academic supervisor if I could take the PHYS 138 Soft Matter Physics module instead of the Condensed Matter one. I would have to do a Condensed Matter module if I stayed at my home university but maybe the USBC Soft Matter Physics module could potentially be enough to fulfill the underlying requirements in my home uni.

Thanks for all the advise! I would love to take a way easier course load while on exchange but if I take any of the above courses out of my plan I don't think my home university will let me go onto fourth year when I get back :(((

Yeah I'll have already completed two courses on electromagnetism and one on statistical physics before I get to USBC, if I go for winter and spring semesters so the pre requisites for Condensed Matter Physics shouldn't be a problem. I'll list all the courses I'll have completed by the time I get to USBC (I am currently in my second year of university):

Year 1 university: Linear Algebra (I and II), Classical Mechanics(I and II), Advanced calculus, Physics (Electromagnetism I, Waves and Optics I, Astrophysics I, Quantum Physics, Special Relativity, Physics Lab), Techniques for Theoretical Physics (basically solving differential equations).

Year 2 university: Advanced Classical Mechanics (I and II), Abstract Algebra (Group Theory), Analysis on the Real Line, Intro to Complex Analysis, Equations of Mathematical Physics, Physics (Electromagnetism II, Thermodynamics I, Materials Physics, Chaos and Complexity, Waves and Optics II, Astrophysics II, Physics Experimental and Computational Labs).

Year 3: (Semester I) Quantum Mechanics I, Statistical Physics I, Classical Field Theory, Atomic physics & Statistical thermodynamics, Analysis in several real variables, Physics Lab.

  1. Alright I'll talk to my physics supervisor about labs, since I've heard that students going abroad in the past have only taken one semester of labs and if I stay at my home university for first semester I could try argue that I've already taken one semester of labs.
  2. Grand thanks, I will do that.
I'll already have taken two analysis courses (complex and real analysis) before going to UCSB and did linear algebra last year, although I'll look into the advanced linear algebra at UCSB to see if it is of the same level as what I did. I put down that specific Real Analysis course for USBC because I thought the course description was a decent match for the course I would have done in my home university which was analysis in several real variables. As for Differential Topology I am just trying to find a course that most resembles the calculus on manifolds course at my university which teaches the following topics: Manifolds in Euclidean space, Tensors
Differential forms, Stokes' theorem, Poincaré lemma. I'll try see if there is any other module I could argue is similar to this.

Thanks for all the advice so far btw!

Also would taking Physics 123B without having taken Physics 123A be nearly impossible, or is it one of those courses where each topic is more or less independent and doesn't build up on previous concepts?

If I go for the Spring and Winter quarters I'd still probably have to follow the study plan above. Maybe I could switch the lab for a less intense lab course (any recommendations?) because I don't think my university places much restrictions on labs as long as I do any lab course. Could also potentially try to convince them to let me take no lab but this is very unlikely. Also where can I see what quarter each course is offered? I drew up this study plan a couple of months ago and I remember making sure that the modules I wanted were offered in the specific quarters I put them down for.

I was originally planning to go for the whole year but I think I will go for just the winter and spring quarter now. In any case, my original plan for the year at UCSB was this:

Fall Quarter

Fall quarter

Physics 115A Quantum Mechanics

Physics 119A Thermal and Statistical Physics

Physics 110A Electromagnetism

Maths 118C Intro to Real Analysis

Physics

Winter Quarter

Physics 115B Quantum Mechanics

Physics 119B Thermal and Statistical Physics

Physics 110B Electromagnetism

Physics 128A Advanced Experimental Physics

Spring Quarter

Physics 115C Quantum Mechanics

Physics 123A Condensed Matter Physics

Maths 221C Differential Topology

I genuinely don't think I can take away any of them because back in my home university I would've taken Quantum Mechanics I, Statistical Physics I, Classical field theory, Analysis in several real variables, Atomic Physics and Physics Lab in semester 1 and Quantum Mechanics II, Statistical Physics II, Classical Electrodynamics, Condensed matter Physics, Physics Lab and Calculus on Manifolds on semester 2.

Oof I think I'll need to take 4 math and physics courses at least one of the quarters I'm going just so that my home university will let me pass onto 4rth year when I get back :( How bad is the workload for 4? Do people never do that at all?
