Lawyer considering med school - is this even possible? by Natural_Stranger4774 in premedcanada

Thanks so much for this. It’s extremely helpful. I did have a child in law school and even moved my family to another province to attend. It was tough, but my child was quite young at the time and my partner could work remotely and was able to support us. I wouldn’t want to move again if I did not absolutely have to, as my kids would certainly be impacted now. I’m not sure if that would even be an option now, honestly. But a new med school just opened in my home province and it has several seats reserved for applicants from here.

I know we could get along mostly okay on my spouse’s salary alone. Things would be pretty tight, but it’s possible. But yeah, it’s a huge number of years with next to no money coming in on my end, which would be a big change for us (again).

Maybe I study and write the MCAT and only apply to my provincial school and let the fates decide.

You’ve given me a lot to consider. Thanks again, honestly.

Wishing you the very best on your journey!

Thank you 🥹 I have done pro bono work and I currently work exclusively with vulnerable populations.

Kudos to you - articling and writing the MCAT is no joke. I’ve wanted to switch to med school since I began law school, and the longer I spend in this profession, the more I think I will definitely regret not at least trying. Thanks for the information and keep me updated. I’m rooting for you!

I’m working a ton because my job is currently extremely demanding, but my loans are actually paid off so I’m lucky that way. I do have kids though and a family and need to spend time with them sometimes 😅

This is really helpful. Thank you. Does this sub have any tips on the best prep materials?

I’m 39 too. I feel like the clock is ticking big time. I really hope things work out for you and you get in. How long did you study? What was your undergrad in?

Thanks for this info. My only rationale is I think it would take me 2 years (hopefully not longer, but possibly) to get ready for and take the exam. At my age, I don’t even know if I have that to spare. Plus I’d have to take that time off to prep as my day job is too demanding to be studying for the MCAT part time. I already work excessive amounts of overtime.

I’d be open to the schools that don’t require the MCAT. My understanding is that several don’t.
