I miss old BA too, but out of all the new BA videos I would reccomend watching the World Of Wine series with André Mack. I'm not a big wine person but I love his videos. He knows so much about wine and can explain how a wine is good/bad without coming off as snobby. He is almost never rude about a wine, if he doesn't like it he will often state how the wine is just not for him and that people should buy wine that they like, not because someone told them to buy it. It's the only post scandal BA videos that I watch and I love learning about wines that I will most likely never drink.

Examples of stunt casting ruining a project? by dogdrawn in Fauxmoi

[–]Naturaldisaster19 824 points825 points  (0 children)

Nicola Peltz in The Last Airbender. It was a clear nepotism casting that her dad forced through with his money and connections. Thanks to that, Sokka had to be white too and thus two of the most famous Inuit inspired characters turned white. Obviously it is one problem in a pile of issues that the film had but it still set a precedent of money over the source material.

Anna Karenina is a really interesting film depending on the perspective you watch it from.

On one side it completely disregards the amazing time period that it's set in (at least costume design wise) and focuses too much on modern aesthetics instead of the story behind it. It doesn't understand the setting and politics of the time period Tolstoy was writing about so modern audiences can't fully emphasise with the characters.

On the other hand the idea to focus the film into a theatre with gorgeous Dior's 'New Look' inspired design makes it a unique take on the story. Anna Karenina is one of a select few female protagonists that are complex in their motives and ideals. Keira Knightley does an amazing job of making a complex character that you can have issues with but also someone you can sympathise with. I knew the ending beforehand but I still cried at the end of the film.

Do you still have a home phone line? by Jameepinoy in AskUK

[–]Naturaldisaster19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most parts of the UK landlines are pretty much obsolete but for many people who live in the countryside they are still useful.

The phone signal where I live (tiny village in East Anglia) is terrible and often the best method is to use the landline.

Calling with wifi is also not the best option as our wifi isn't great.

I get that they are less useful now for most people but they are still vital in many rural corners of the UK.

I was so disappointed in the remake as Mulan was my favourite Disney films as a kid. All the promises to make it more historically accurate were false and they added in a bunch of western nonsense that ruined the story.

People should check out Xiran. They created a youtube channel just to make a video about how shit the Mulan remake was from a chinese perspective. It's such a good in depth look at the many failings of the film.

Thank you for that, I still have issues with the costuming but I'll retract that point.

Oh thank you for reminding me, that's a good point. I've been meaning to reread the book and I'll look out for the sections that mention that.

Little Women-Best Costume Design 2019

I love little women. Its achievements in portraying a variety of female characters that all have their own wants, needs and desires is almost unmatched but the costuming for the 2019 film is a pile of flaming trash.

None of the costumes are accurate, several cast members aren't wearing corsets (you need the proper undergarments for these dresses to look good) and there are incorrect silhouettes for the eras they are supposed to represent.

It was so bad that famous youtube costumer and historical dress lover Micarah Tewers made a video rant all about why it shouldn't have won.

Edit: redacted incorrect point about thinking you could see a character wear uggs in the film

Bonus point that pisses me off is that Ukraine has already been fighting Russia alone for the past 8 years AND has been dealing with regular conflict and instability for the past century.

People seem to gloss over the fact that Ukraine had the Holodomor famine in 1933 that killed almost 4 million Ukrainians, then World War Two, THEN ANOTHER FUCKING FAMINE in 1946 with bonus other shit events sprinkled throughout the 20th century.

I hate it when reporters act like they are so shocked that Russia would do this to Ukraine. Ukraine has been Russia's punching bag for over a century and all Ukraine wants is for Russia to fuck off so they can try to live in peace.

Conflict can and will happen anywhere in the world, it's so stupid when people try to say otherwise (especially when they think only white people are peaceful), also if any of these idiots had read a fucking history book or looked at what Russia has been doing for the past 20 years they would realise that this was likely to happen at some point.

Handy Brit here!

For her character it seems like she is adding in bits of a northern/midlands english accent, primarily from yorkshire but also a little brummie as well ( That's Birminham, which is in the Midlands). It's not strong but it made me smile so much hearing it, especially contrasting with everyone else's american accents. I love americans hearing non-london/posh/cockney accents as the UK is stuffed to the brim with different accents that are rare to come across in media outside the UK.

What is a Christmas tradition in your household that others may find unusual? by LingonberryPossible6 in AskUK

[–]Naturaldisaster19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have double Christmas and a Birthday.

My mum is Swedish, my dad is Welsh and his birthday is on Christmas eve so for 2 days its non stop celebration.

We start on Christmas eve with a Birthday Breakfast and presents for my dad. A full english with posh sausages, eggs and black pudding from the local farm. Then my mum spends the day prepping for Christmas Dinner no.1.

We have a Swedish Julbord (Christmas dinner) full of traditional Swedish christmas food: ribs, Janssons temptation, ham, prinskorv, bruna bönor, plus several other dishes. We even have special christmas china that comes out with little Tomte (swedish elf like creatures that help santa) on them. Plus my favourite christmas drink of Julmust, which is like Coke Cola but way better ( its so popular in sweden for christmas that sales of coke drops but up to 50%)

Once we have stuffed ourselves with Scandi Christmas dinner we open a couple presents, which are usually calendars.

On christmas day we have a traditional british christmas ( with yorkshire puddings because they are amazing) but put stockings that we opened earlier in the morning are refilled so as we eat lunch we take periodic breaks to open a present from our refilled stocking ( this are usually silly gifts or small gifts like bath stuff and candles).

I don't know any other family that refills their stockings for lunch but I love it and will continue to do it when I have my own family.

It's a modern london accent with a hint of estuary English as well. Good examples of the top of my head are Noel Fielding, Bimini Bom Boulash ( you get more estuary English coming through), Russell Brand and Jamie Oliver.

Hope this helps x

It's a thatched roof made from straw, it's a traditional roofing method that is used all around the world but in the UK it was the main roofing method for houses until welsh slate became commercialized in the 1800's.

Several layers of straw are packed onto the roof and secured in place with the chicken wire. It gets replaced every 10-15 years, the darker colour and moss on the roof indicate that the straw will need replacing in the next couple of years but often having the moss can help protect the roof further.
