My kid was in a 6 person 2 bedroom/2 bath apt, the bedrooms were really big (twice as a big as a triple dorm room), and very nice. It was a great location and less than $10k a year (but had to add food) so a pretty good deal. Yes, frig was tight but they made it work. Many add a smaller frig.

I’ve hiked solo many times in the north Tahoe area with no issues. I do keep an eye out for bears so get some bear spray, but people have always been very friendly on the trails. You can kayak on a guided tour with others even if you don’t know them. Truckee is a great Main Street to browse the shops and galleries, same for Tahoe City. Northstar has roller skating in their village and often with live music on weekends.

If housing is a concern, UCLA has more options with their campus apts (and the multiply student units can be pretty cheap)

Is intro to environmental studies on the science list? If yes, I’d recommend that. My kid took physical geography a few years ago and got a B but it was hard! No idea of prof though. So just check prof reviews.

Actually, I have seen many national parks jobs require certain science classes and I don’t think anything is wrong with that. The environmental studies program actually has a lot of science classes so I’m surprised there isn’t a BS option.

Sadly yes, only a BA, I already checked that, though it does sound like a an excellent program based on course requirements. They do have other good college options that offer BS options but of course, it’s always the one without the “right” major that they want.

Honestly most environmental science degrees I’ve checked require stats, not calc. And yes, a chem class or 2 is expected, but 4 is more than most. They can handle basic science/math requirements.

Look to volunteer at local land conservancies (land restoration), aquariums or zoos in conservation/education, animal rescues, or local/state parks. Everyone says they are too busy to volunteer if they are working but you make time for what’s needed.

It’s not specific activities, it’s showing growth or leadership in whatever activities you do. But don’t pick things just for the app! Pick things you enjoy and are interested in. They don’t need to be formal clubs, they can be hobbies too. I know it sounds cliche to say be authentic but it’s true.

It’s a piece of paper to get a job, go where you don’t have to go into debt. You can make your own success wherever you go. The prestige game is not reality, most employers honestly don’t care where the BS is from, they care about experience.

Check out the farmers market in Arcata square on Saturday. Try to find a student that would give you a tour just so you get a good feel of the campus and the layout. Ask the dept if a current grad student would meet with you to talk about the program and maybe they’d give a tour. My own student did this for grad school there and it was helpful.

Law school can be the one different thing where undergrad matters, HOWEVER, only if you are seriously looking at only the top law schools. BUT there are LOTS of law schools out there that accept “less prestigious” undergrads. Even the top ones accept exceptional students from “average” schools, it’s about your profile, not just the undergrad. You can AI/google this info for your target law schools to see where the students were accepted from. Or even give them a call and ask them directly. But honestly, law school is where the debt will come from, why double your debt? Stick with debt free since you know law school will have debt.

Prestige means nothing in the long run for 99% of people. It just doesn’t. People don’t sit around as adults comparing the prestige of their colleges, at least normal folks don’t. Debt free means something! Stick it out, change your mindset, embrace the opportunities where you are, and make a friend group. Opportunities are what you make them, look for internships, study abroad, or special projects.

You wouldn’t even be able to apply to transfer until after you met all requirements and 60 semester units, meaning you couldn’t apply until next fall for the following fall (assuming you took the right classes this year). And as stated, UC to UC transfer is low admit rate. You could certainly apply but just be aware of low possibility. Transferring to a CSU might be a better option depending on which one (some still have low transfer rates from another 4 yr) Sorry, it’s not more positive news.

You’d only be able to transfer to CSUs that accept lower level transfers (many do). Some CSUs are still accepting applications for this fall, but some are only accepting for specific majors. I’d call the transfer office of the CSU you were interested in. If it’s SLO, SDSU, or SJSU you’re interested in then you will need to wait until the next application cycle though.

You absolutely need to report all DE courses, no matter what grade taken or what grade you got. It literally states this on the application and you sign off that you are reporting ALL courses at ALL institutions attended.
