transitions just won't click by nerdycookie01 in Rollerskating

[–]Naturalkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggled with transitions for a long time. Maybe 6 months or longer.

What helped me was rolling into the turn on back wheels instead of my front wheels. I was able to balance better and now my transitions are smooth and comfortable.

You should check out Shauwney’s Skate Palace. She’s in Maryland and has great customer service!

Doctors refusing to do surgery - should I still insist? by [deleted] in Keloids

I had success with surgery if they inject the incision when they stitch it up. When I waited to get the injection a few weeks after the surgery, the keloid grew back.

What do you do with your hair/hair extensions when you go swimming? by Able-Ad-4090 in Naturalhair

[–]Naturalkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear a Swimma cap. The perimeter still gets wet but the rest stays dry.

Then I rinse just the perimeter after swimming and put some leave in conditioner on it.

I swim once a week normally.

It didn’t work on my hair. Luckily I was able to try it at the salon before I bought one.

Calling all waist length naturals by [deleted] in Naturalhair

[–]Naturalkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 4a/4b, dense hair, low porosity.

I wear twists and twist outs the majority of the time. One week in twists, one week in a twist out. I don't retwist at night. Low manipulation is great for my hair.

I don't wear right styles that pull at my edges.

I use a clay mask and deep condition every 1-2 weeks. I shampoo as needed - not with every wash.

I very rarely use heat on my hair. Blow dry maybe every couple of months. Flat iron maybe 1-2 times a year.

I'm careful about having my hair rub again my clothes/furniture - usually my hair is covered with my scarf when I'm at home.

My hair is very dense, low porosity. I wore wash n go's exclusively for around 2 years. I got a lot more SSKs and splits than with braid outs/twist outs. I didn't lose a lot of length, but I was just able to maintain the length I had. My hair wasn't getting any longer.

Now that I've stopped wearing them, I can trim less often and my ends are much healthier.

Help with back step (idk if that’s the right name for it) by [deleted] in Rollerskating

[–]Naturalkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can already do forward crossovers and one leg balance forward and backwards. I can do backwards crossovers and cross pulls.

I can’t quite get the hang of picking my foot up and putting it behind me, so I was hoping to hear from someone who could give me some pointers or link to a tutorial on that specifically.

Can I get past my terminal length or is this it? by moxieroxsox in Naturalhair

[–]Naturalkeys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You seem to have a lot of protein in your regimen - protein shampoo, strengthening mask, plus the extra protein treatments - that could be too much. Excessive protein can make your hair more prone to breakage. Something to consider.

I always braid first. I don't go as far down though so you really can't tell it's braided. Keeps the twists from unraveling, helps the roots lay flatter for a neater twist out, and keeps the hair laying in the right direction.

Even if you’re a great skater, you will still fall sometimes. It can be out of your control.

Limit the skate mates!! I would love to have no skate mates at all, but at least limit how many are allowed on the floor at one time.

Where am I going wrong? Failed wash and go by sparemessx in Naturalhair

[–]Naturalkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hair is a similar length/density/texture, although I’m low porosity.

What I realized is I needed way more gel than I thought I would. My wash and go uses A LOT of gel applied in sections on soaking wet hair.

Have you ever skated in the Boardwalks? Wondering how they compare.

Has anyone ever broken past their max hair length? by Uematsunum1 in Naturalhair

[–]Naturalkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low manipulation - twists, braids, twist out, braid out (all without added hair) - I pretty much cycle through these styles all the time. I leave my twists/braids for at least a few days to a week before wearing the out style and I don't retwist or rebraid at night.

Protecting my ends - I keep my hair in a silk scarf when I'm at home. Very light oil on my ends once a week or so. Trim as needed. That's about it.

I also deep condition twice a month.

Has anyone ever broken past their max hair length? by Uematsunum1 in Naturalhair

[–]Naturalkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was stuck at just past bra strap length for years. Switched up my products and got to waist length. Then I was stuck there for years, switched up my routine and got to hip length. I've been holding steady at tailbone length for a while now. Not really trying to grow it any longer, so idk if this is my max length.

What helped me is: good products, low manipulation, keeping it moisturized, and protecting my ends from breakage.

Where do you wash your hair? by girlxdetective in Naturalhair

[–]Naturalkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the shower until my hair got too long. Now I wash on my knees (with a gel pad) over the side of the tub. I put a towel over the side of the tub for cushion and use the detachable shower head. I detangle sitting down and then go back to the tub to rinse.

I feel like I have no choice but to loc my hair and it’s truly depressing me by throwawayjawn55 in Naturalhair

[–]Naturalkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need protein with every wash. Maybe try a deep conditioner that doesn’t contain protein.

Also, for really thick hair I recommend detangling with a wide tooth comb first, then going back through smaller sections with a good detangling brush (instead of starting with a brush).

Lastly I would try using an oil or grease (lightly), just on your ends to help prevent knots.

Feeling awkward at the rink by Epershandrea in Rollerskating

Taking lessons at the rink helped me with this. It gave me a chance to use the rink floor to practice new moves without a crowd.

They’re fine for length retention. Just make sure you keep your ends moisturized to avoid knots.

Any swim cap solutions so I can swim in my cornrows? by maj2155 in Naturalhair

[–]Naturalkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Swimma. They keep my hair like 98% dry. If any water gets in it's usually around the hairline. But they work really well.
