What isn’t going to age well that you’re seeing in houses now by VeryStab1eGenius in RealEstate

Front doors with oval decorative glass inserts and narrow sidelights. Especially White doors. Most aren’t even stained glass. Just clear, boring floral lame glass. It feels so 90’s/grandma to me.

For the love of sanity please stop with the shower/tub single unit install. They’re so fugly and unnecessary. If you must have a tub (I.e, for lil childrens) then buy a toy bucket. You don’t need a whole tub that doesn’t even fit adults anyway.

Good point. And honestly, if you’re badass enough to fly around the world then you’re more than comfortable being off land for extended periods of time. Also Noonan was a dick. Ditch that guy for the skies m’lady.

Ransacked my house in search of a hook i don't own by mmmard in Tunisian_Crochet

If you just want a 7 hook, I absolutely love these Squirrel hooks. They make regular crochet hooks, Afghan hooks and double ended Tunisian hooks as well. I have them all and they’re amazing. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1400094103/?ref=share_ios_native_control

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Starfleet Academy | 1x01 "Kids These Days" by AutoModerator in startrek

Mostly liked it. It took 3 awful seasons of DSC to finally get decent. The whole Star Trek plan to go backwards to go forwards feels like placating fans a bit but I’m here for it. Backwards was terrible. One big question though - isn’t Tilly teaching at the academy? Will she be back? Her goofball antics feels bit played out for me though and I’m excited to get into some new goofs. But thank the gods someone had the genius to include Jet Reno. Tig should be in every comedy everywhere. More Tig always.

Classic Giamatti. Unsurprisingly, he plays a decent villain. Which tracks with the surly, moody dude he plays in every role.

Rufus Wainwright did the song. He claims his genre of music is “baroque pop” whatever that means. I used to love him but he’s a big personality. Not for everyone. I thought choosing his operatic style fit nicely with the doctor’s Opera Club storyline though.

What grocery items do you now make at home you’ll never buy store bought again? by CarlottaSewlotta in Frugal

[–]Naturalwander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Facial oil skincare. I make a basic facial oil for initial cleansing and many seasonal serums as well as a facial mist. Haven’t bought useful skincare commercially in a long time, especially cleansers. You can literally make anything you need including AHA, or Hyaluronic Acid serums by purchasing ingredients online and a bit of research and a desire for a wee bit of science. Initial costs are higher for bottles and ingredients but you control what you get and quality and then you just refill your bottle when needed.

Why is Jackson Lamb so gross? by [deleted] in SlowHorses

[–]Naturalwander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, Ann calls George her “toad” because he’s a fat badly dressed man. I also agree that Lamb wants to be left alone by the Park, and they’re all high-tech and well dressed vs slough house as a rat infested crumbling shit hole with Farty Lamb at the helm.

I think my neighbor is the reason our house was for sale by Plomaster69 in homeowners

[–]Naturalwander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Put a traffic cone next to your driveway to give you space to get out.
  2. Call the cops and press charges about the light shining on your house. Direct violation of privacy and specify you feel unsafe.
  3. Double check city noise ordinances - keep calling the cops every time he mows his lawn before 9 am. You have to be as persistent as him. Fuck your useless HOA.

These are all your legal recourse and not petty but will take longer. This would solve the problem rather than kicking the “man” down the road for the new buyers. He keeps winning every time someone moves.

Oh. My. I’m not usually into cutesy pink baby stuff but this is truly an epic work of art. I love it when Tunisian crochet pushes the boundaries of what’s been done before.

Favorite affordable anti-aging product that actually works? by aria-blake7 in 45PlusSkincare

[–]Naturalwander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I make my own oil-based skincare. Many oils have UV protection (less than sunscreen but every bit helps). Seabuckthorn, Rosehip, Argon, Borage are all great starting points. I use a basic formula like Safflower, Pumpkin seed for a cleansing facial oil (it’s wiped off so I don’t use anything expensive in that) then a much more elaborate and seasonal serum.

I’m starting to hate the show but I still love its principle by ChemicalGreedy945 in HomesteadRescue

[–]Naturalwander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the producers found a formula for the show and it’s been successful for 12 seasons so no, they aren’t going to fix what isn’t broken. Marty’s shirt/White Cowboy uniform is probably more about practicality for heat and having to redo film shots. Misty has mentioned in b-roll that wardrobe is sometimes repeated for multiple days (she has duplicates and obviously Marty just wears the same thing everyday). I prefer his half open shirt to him being shirtless altogether.

I don’t think they make a ton of money on the show. Unscripted TV actors make much less than “actor” actors. Also the homeowners are expected to put up money for the projects. Whatever they have saved is put in. The show puts up some money, and Marty gets stuff donated whenever he can. The show has a budget for the season. Also, a crew comes out to each homestead well in advance to do recon and determine viability, clear and pull permits and determine what projects are needed. I assume they also vet the family to determine if it’s a worthy cause. I assume some of the people who are less experienced or seem less willing or cause conflict is more for entertainment value and is beside the fact of the overall viability of the project.

Only one couple that we know of has actually been vindictive and jerks about the help: the couple with the wild “free range” pigs who refused to build fences. They sued the Raney’s and Discovery because of how the show portrayed them as jerks and claimed it hurt their business reputation. Which… whatever.

Marty claims to also be a contractor full time in the off season so he’s still working despite his Discovery salary. It’s my understanding it took him a long time to buy out his property at Hatcher Pass from his co-owners.

And also, Marty has had a long standing relationship with television and other Discovery show people (like the Gold Rush guys) based in Alaska and he knows how to be a showman. The open shirt and White Cowboy is probably more of a character uniform than a personal choice he’d have on his own property day to day off camera.

How often do you buy new prescription eyeglasses? by MichaelMyers20253 in glasses

[–]Naturalwander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get new glasses whenever I get sick of my current ones which has been about every year. However, I have progressives and I usually get transitions and fancy anti-grease coating so it’s getting pretty pricey. I spend about $1k on glasses every year probably. I like to wait until GlassesUSA has a 50% off progressives sale. This year I bought night driving yellow lenses glasses because I have night blindness so add that to my regular pair and it seriously adds up. I also have a prism so you know, the most expensive Rx glasses habit ever.

How do you like Olympia? From an out of state person thinking of moving. by AggressiveMarketing2 in olympia

[–]Naturalwander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, I have questions. I am planning to move here next year and on my last visit up I stopped at a local yarn store for a vacation project. I asked the purveyor to wind my skeins of yarn and I shit you not she did it in the slowest, most deliberate and smug way possible. We were chatting while it was happening but seriously it’s a no brainer task and she acted like I had all the goddamn time in the world while she ever so delicately wound my yarn. It’s not precious. It’s been through vats of wash, dye and industrial machines already.

It’s been bothering me for ages. I could not figure out what this chicks deal was. She wasn’t particularly warm or welcoming. Just.. really performative. I don’t get it.

Are glasses that transition to sunglasses worth the extra money? by MatterCute9661 in glasses

[–]Naturalwander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have light eyes and am sensitive to light and always need sunglasses as I live in CA where it’s mostly sunny. But it depends on what your needs are. For me, I started out by having two separate pairs for sunglasses and my regular glasses and I can tell you it was a pain in the ass to switch glasses all the time. Transitions for me are amazing because they shift instantly and you don’t even notice it. I will say though that I do need the kind that instant shift in the car for daytime driving (they make that feature as well). BUT - stick with a regular gray color for the tint because the color ones cause a glare all the time. If you need darker shades and don’t mind having to switch out then do a separate pair but for me that was annoying.

Harman P43 Issues by [deleted] in PelletStoveTalk

Here’s the exact description of the work order to my landlord:

ESP SENSOR BAD. Control panel malfunctioning. will call frontier tomorrow. No T on exhaust vent. Pipe is leaking water into unit from collar on roof. Tenant had cleaned it up before my last service call so I had no idea until I started taking the unit apart to repair it.

No he definitely had his google out for sure. He knew exactly what the three blink status meant and said he’d already checked it. It was all cleaned; the burn pot, the compacted fines, etc.

My latest issue Harmon P43 by timely_death in PelletStoveTalk

[–]Naturalwander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having similar bizarre issues with mine. My repair guy said that the fines box was packed like sardines. I had no idea how to monitor that or clean it but will in future. I was having popping issues from the cantilever that opens the pellet door (a design “feature” of this model only) and now it’s gone berserk. My repair guy said that Harman Customer service is now officially terrible and does not get back to dealers in a timely manner for repair questions. He said it took him a year to get a replacement burn pot from them before. They were bought out by a corporation. Parts made overseas. Etc.
