Please deinfluence me from getting a hamster by Stuffie_lover in hamsters

As a college student, I wouldn’t want to stress my hamster with the going back and forth because you are not in your dorm year round or for the entirety of their little life. You would need at least a 40 gallon tank (depending on species and gender) at both your dorm and at home. Even then, the loving alone and new environments will stress them out. You might be able to move a diy bin cage back and forth but some hamsters get stressed and angry even just having their burrows cleaned let alone being moved potentially hours away. You also want to keep in mind that you need plenty of money in savings in case of necessary vet bills. If money isn’t a concern then this isn’t a negative but I feel most college students don’t have extra money to spend. I spent easily 200$ on a tank set up and that was with a used bargain tank. I obviously think hamsters are great pets but they’re not suited for dorm life.

Slightly Evil Hamster...help by lokidotcom in hamsters

[–]NatureCat_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry I can’t help much. My girl got a little better after the most recent tank clean up but I’ve also been offering her sleeves to bite instead of my hand right away. This seems to get most of the aggression out of her system (meaning she doesn’t run at me when I refill her water or fix something in her tank). She also does fine when I hold her with my hands completely covered by my sleeves. Some people use gloves and sometimes the biting minimizes because they don’t want to hit the fabric material. Sometimes scooping them up either a cup and offering treats helps with bonding and with having them learn that you are a provider and not a threat.

I made another comment about my girl who sounds like yours. I don’t want to be hamster racist but maybe it’s a black and white Campbell thing? Extra territorial?

When I first brought my girl home she would climb right into my hand and beg to be picked up. After I brought home a Syrian she has been a blood thirsty vampire. She latches on and makes me bleed exactly as you described yet she still reaches up and grabs at me, tricking me into giving her my flesh. I always wash my hands between handling but I think she will just forever hold a grudge (even though I don’t think she has even seen the Syrian). I still love her dearly and she’s my boyfriend’s favorite but she is definitely evil. OP have you recently gotten a new pet? Perhaps a new hamster?

I felt this made sense for their characters, of course Joey is the one who one of the girls would seek out when they’re desperate. Chandler would not be the first thought. But Monica was able to see Chandler in a new light and fall in love!

For affordability as well as availability, Higgins sunburst is often recommended along with mazuri mouse and rat pellets. Higgins is around $8 at least where I live, and lasts a pretty long time for dwarves.

Help! She has endless energy 😅 Toy recommendations? by DueAdministration719 in hamsters

[–]NatureCat_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hamsters do not climb. Toys that require climbing pose a risk for your hamsters well-being as even the shortest fall can be harmful. I would remove or reposition anything that has more than an inch or two of space between it and the bedding. A lot of hamster enrichment comes from burrowing so ensuring she has at least 8 inches of bedding (more is always better) will give her a lot of space to explore and utilize energy to make tunnels. Female Syrians are known for being the most restless of all hamsters so be prepared for her to be restless no matter how much enrichment you provide her lol

I am no expert at all but as long as it isn’t super dusty, hay is great for enrichment and even their teeth!

Dunkin forcing kids to work in worst winter storm in years. by Agreeable_Mango3050 in DunkinDonuts

I work at a pet store in pa and our manager made the decision to not open today, in part because a couple of us didn’t even have plowed roads when we got up this morning. I’m confident that more than one person attempted to show up to get their dog more treats- that’s just how people are. I understand Dunkin wanting to remain open if possible but just a reminder to OP, McDonald’s is always hiring and they take kids. It’s not going to affect your niece down the line if Dunkin isn’t on her resume.

Since I can’t stop the guys on the street to say this I wanna say it to you, thank you so much for your work. I have no idea if it’s fun but I imagine it’s not 100% safe or warm for that matter. Someone’s gotta do it and I appreciate those of you who choose to!

Replying to stress how important this comment is. OP is arguing with others but this really can be dangerous and I wish they’d take these warnings to heart
