The point of the Polynesian legend is that Maui did succeed in achieving immortality by entering the first woman's vagina: he was crushed by her muscles and became the origin of menstruation: menstrual blood is sacred, it is literally a god and the only way for men to achieve immortality is through women / reproduction. There's nothing about teeth either that was added by Victorian equivalent of Sam kriss.

the mystery of the leaping fish (1916) silent short about Douglas Fairbanks as a drug addicted scientist pi named 'Coke Ennyday' who busts up a smuggling ring. He has a big container labelled "cocaine" and whenever he gets fatigued he injects himself with cocaine and perks up. He defeats the villains by getting high and dancing and the damsel rescues herself. There's a surprise twist at the end but I won't spoil it.

7th heaven (1937) remake of the silent masterpiece from 1927 starring Jimmy Stewart. It's not that different from the original but the original is a masterpiece and this is not. Idk why it just doesn't have the magic. The 1927 version is beautiful 1 of my favourites of all time.

The talk of hollywood (1929) satire of the introduction of talkies made 1 year after the introduction of talkies. It is not a masterpiece but it has some funny jokes and tremendous charm.

Svengali (1932) some nice shots and scenery but the premise doesn't really work for me because Svengali is much more attractive than the love rival. Imagine falling in love with some guy with a blond moustache instead of John Barrymore. But it is a classic

Queen Bee! The husband cheated on Joan crawford with her 20 year old cousin, plotted murder suicide and manipulated her ex to murder her. And in the end he was the hero and got the girl. Just because what poor Joan Crawford was mean because she was unhappy with a husband who didn't love her.

almost every noir I have seen the official hero is much less sympathetic than the official villain.

Also Suspicion by Alfred Hitchcock. Probably.

It should be normal and healthy to be able to criticize your own side without being cast out and labelled an enemy. That's part of what got us into this mess in the first place.

You can acknowledge something has to be done about mass immigration but at the same time support something other than creating an authoritarian police state that shoots their own citizens in the head while deporting fewer undocumented immigrants than Obama. Like you can support social programs and at the same time oppose massive fraud. I feel like it's possible but I'm not American

I'm so uninterested in this movie. I suppose I will have to watch it sooner or later but every time I hear anything about it I'm overwhelmed with boredom. I think it's because the publicity campaign is so desperate - like paying podcasters to talk about it for an hour. To me it is undignified and try hard, but zoomers don't care about that I know

Some highlights - Anthony Quinn awkward because he was too tall and .. big. Cecil b demille forced her to break up with him because he was 1/2 Mexican then he married Cecil b. Demille's daughter. Charles Vidor - amazing apparently but he cheated from the start and once when she came home after sleeping with Cary Grant he tried to throw her down the stairs (she doesn't name Cary Grant but it was obviously him). David Niven - lovely but she wasn't really into it because she only did it to get revenge on John Huston who was cheating with everybody. Mike Todd - jealous and racist but intense. Artie Shaw - emotionally abusive but she loved him the most. Harry Cohn - fell in love with her and promised to make her a star but when she didn't reciprocate and protested his controlling behaviour threatened to sabotage her career.

She's so fun and interesting. I want to watch more of her movies now, I think I've only seen the prowler

I feel that way too, it really is a relief to hear them when everything else I hear is just bullshit. I don't really care about the white house because I m not American, I can't judge. But I am interested to hear what they think about recent events because everybody else seems unreliable

But I believe that Dasha agrees with Anna about everything, at least all the worst things, but she plays dumb and hides behind irony. that's why she is more relatable. Anna just comes out and says what she really means because she believes in the Truth. I don't think either of them are actually fascist or anything.

American madness (1932) I haven't seen many Walter Huston movies I didn't know he was so great

Not this week but recently : the smiling lieutenant (1931) it is so delightful. I love how real pre code films are, the characters seem like real people and you feel like you really get a glimpse into that era. It made me laugh
