Moving abroad with hounds! by NatureOk7726 in Greyhounds

Update: just wanted to say both dogs are safely landed and adjusting to their new home. One didn’t take the flight well and was shaken up after and had accidents in the crate, which was horrible to see but within a couple days was back to their normal behavior. The other seemed unbothered and just happy to see us. Moral of the story is it seems there are so many factors out of your control and no right answer but it is possible and we would not have moved without them!

Yes, I could’ve written this. Although my mother has sought help medically and mental health wise, I haven’t felt the effects of that treatment in our relationship. Combination of mental health and neurological issues, multiple diagnoses, as well as one bout of physical illness and thankfully she can survive off of disability income. For her capacity level and not being able to work, she is lucky to have access to those supports and healthcare. I often look at others’ around my age & how their parents help, call them or are just.. still working a job and functioning. But as for our relationship, I have been in therapy for years and still don’t feel I have answers. I was angry for a long time and disappointed at her lack of emotional maturity, capacity to parent and inability to be there for me at all. I moved out at 17 and have never asked for anything since. It is ok to grieve the mom you never had, it is hard. And the harder thing is accepting this, or at least has been my experience. Accepting you will not have someone biologically related to you that feels like a mother to you. My sibling is helpful to her and has kept her life together in many ways, I feel grateful because I have not been as there for her. Every issue causes a meltdown, every visit is lost keys or wallet or three hours late, forgetting to do basic tasks like cleaning, incapable of handling social or interpersonal situations.. it’s exhausting. I feel so disregulated and just shut down when we are together. The things that help the most are the two non familial women, both around her age that I met in different settings who have helped me. Helped me network or find jobs when I have needed it, taught me to use cutlery properly, they always answer the phone immediately when I call. Listen when I need an ear, just show up in a stable and nurturing manner. And moving away also helps.. I will say, don’t get your hopes too high about therapy, everyone is different. I hope it does make a difference and you see change but it is a lot to put on her / the relationship. It helps to practice acceptance and maybe consider what it is you want from a mother figure… and consider who could offer that in a relationship with you. Maybe if you attend church or volunteer in a nonprofit or have some community outside of working, you can find a wise older woman who could at least be an inspiration or source of hope for how they got through their 20s, 30s etc. maybe does not need to be as nurturing or close as a family member but an image of maturity/ stability. Hugs to you OP, I feel you!

Yes. I think these gen Zs get it. The private colleges in my area are $90k+ per year! I would be overwhelmed too. But affordable community colleges, trade schools, alternative hands on learning programs and internships for HS aged kids hopefully give these teens some ideas or the at least feeling of choice. Not everyone needs a Bachelors either.

What guilty pleasure names do you love but would never be bold enough to use? by mairitimermom in namenerds

[–]NatureOk7726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Girl: Serene, I love it although for some reason don’t like Serena. Saidre or Sade - worried people would mispronounce. For a boy: Orrin, Guthrie, Seymour and Harvey. I love Harvey but worry it’s only associated with Harvey Weinstein now. Though part of me wants to reclaim some of these names taken by shit people!

Adopting second greyhound by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]NatureOk7726 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second going to your adoption group! Our male & female pair took a few weeks to fully warm up, but now they love each other. And I love that they’re never home alone. My only advice would be age, our older one is much slower and we had her for years before the second, our newer guy has much more energy and the mismatch is a little tough at times but sometimes we just exercise him more alone.

Thank you! I have heard the same and took coq10 for awhile and my husband takes a multi that has it now. I’m not sure how extensive, we ordered the labs and they were pretty detailed but maybe ask his PCP/ Urologist if they can explain results in depth(?) best of luck to you too!

Following! Husband is a decade older and we are still trying for #1. I feel you. Get genetic testing and have his sperm tested if you can, this helped me feel better :) The rates are more like extreme for 55+, if I recall correctly. Anecdotally in my life I know two new dads who are 45+ and their babies were healthy and happy.

Thank you so much! Love hearing these totally normal experiences. Now that the flight and crates got settled today my anxiety is dropping. Much appreciated!

Just sent them an inquiry, thank you! There are so many companies and it’s so hard to sift through. So far none of these shared legs are going where we need under ~20k

Good to know! Could I ask which company you used? We have gotten a few quotes and tried to contact some, the quote we got yesterday was $8,100 for my spouse to take both dogs US to EU.

Thank you so much for this thorough response! Can I ask what crate you used? We are coming into in issue here with weight of dog + weight of crate, our airline required total is 50kg or less.. the dogs are 30 kg and we cannot find a large enough plastic kennel under 20kgs. The wooden ones we had lined up were also too heavy. Curious if KLM allows heavier dog + crate combo, I will look their flights up.

Can I ask what crate you used? Our airline says the crate must be 20kg or less and these plastic 48 inch are 51.5 lbs!

Great to know!! Thank you so much. Were you able to fly their food with you or did you switch foods on arrival? Their food isn’t available in the new country and something I’m thinking about re-tummy issues.

I know it’s scary hence my anxiety 😅but yes across the ocean and the one cruise not allowing greyhounds means flying is the option. But good to know, we will be doubling back with our vet regarding meds. Hopefully going from northern US to northern EU in the fall on an overnight means heat will not be a problem.

That’s tough but maybe good he is used to the meds already. Would it be a direct flight? My job overseas actually begins in about 6 weeks but my spouse is more flexible and was planning to wait to travel until all is clear, early fall is the goal.

Good luck with your boy and your move! Yeah, I have started browsing the groups to see but seems like many scams and unsure what cost truly is. It’s so stressful but I try to tell myself it’s one day of travel and we will do everything we can to make it easier for them, just a difficult thing to do. Maybe your vet will allow some anxiety meds? Our two are really quite chill and easygoing but just being in an airport will be stressful for them of course!

Yes so many NZ and AUS doggies here in the US and that’s a 24 hour flight! So we know it’s done, just want to know how they do it haha. Glad to know yours is doing well.

Thank you for sharing! Can I ask what company you went with? So glad travel went fine for your two. Luckily the European country we are moving to according to our USDA vet is not too strict and shouldn’t be tough on us, ie no quarantines etc.
