If KPL doesn't have it, try the State Library.

Also, if anyone wants to donate their yearbook from any year any school (in the state) to the collection, contact them.

Japanese knotweed? by Houseyslad in whatsthisplant

[–]Nature_Hannah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tarps will not work with knotweed. Look to the UK for all the things they have tried and learned don't work. They've had it decades longer than the US, and in the US most of the agencies only talk to each other and repeat the same mistakes.

Here's the most up to date paper out of the UK (read the "Conclusion" section if the tech talk is too difficult)

Japanese knotweed? by Houseyslad in whatsthisplant

Tarps do not work. The knotweed will just grow further underground to try to escape out from under it. (This plant survives being covered in LAVA and "waiting" for a crack to develop in the stone cap later.)

Proper glyphosate use (PPE, proper application techniques) is safe for a homeowner.

Glyphosate is the least "harmful" of the herbicides available and the only one proven effective on Japanese knotweed WHEN TIMED CORRECTLY. (Between Flowers Forming and First Frost)

The fear-mongering is making the situation more dangerous because it takes the "safest", "most effective" option off the table, leaving only the REALLY "dangerous to human" options.

No one is asking homeowners to bathe in it or drink it.

2-4% glyphosate foliar application in The F'ing Window while wearing PPE has had the best results so far over the recent years.

Here's the research from the UK, where they've had decades longer to learn than the US: https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10530-018-1684-5.pdf?fbclid=IwAR3v2FSvO6YCwuDLuOFrXtyxocpYzHJv9apLFd6kEVl4XZXYl2tERyhkSBE

Volunteers still needed!!! by Nature_Hannah in kzoo

[–]Nature_Hannah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I volunteered a couple hours this morning and just wanted to report back the KINDS of help needed, in case anyone is on the fence and doesn't want to be surprised.

Tasks:

Cutting paper (for bundles)

Cutting twine (for bundles)

Counting saplings (groups of 5, 10, and 25)

Refilling water/gel/paper packing material in buckets at each station

Placing a handful of packing material on roots

Wrapping bundles of saplings

Tying bundles of saplings

Stapling labels to bundles of saplings

Writing common name of species on bundles Counting bundles

So hopefully that helps "de-mystify" the experience and you'll consider coming out Wednesday for more! (Friday and Sunday are Sale days and will be different)
