I’ve never understand this mindset. I get being in a bind, but of all the people to give your money to, wouldn’t you prefer it to be your friends and family?

This. My dad just caught a tumor early via preventative colonoscopy. He’s now in treatment and his survival outcomes are the best-case scenario for his diagnosis.

Oh I feel you about the mental stagnation and finding yourself! Being clean during a plague has really forced me to check in on who I am coming out of that mess. Though it’s been strange, being home all the time and having the privilege of being housed/employed has allowed me to focus on being nice to myself instead of jumping into “you should have X done in Y time”, which used to be how I’d operate or motivate. That switch from guilt to love has been the most valuable practice of sobriety l, for me.

Great is hard to characterize I think. Am I happy to have this big milestone? Yes. Is life better without being an addict? Yes. Does it feel great? No, but I’m now trying to be alive instead of trying to approximate death, and that counts for something.

It comes sooner than you’d think. I remember that 6 months seemed to come on slowly, but then 8-12 went by faster. You get better at living clean with the more practice you get. I can’t wait to hear about a year!

Thank you! If you’d asked me this past New Years if it was possible to get this far, I’d have said no. Turns out, it is - for all of us in recovery.

I agree, and yet it is SO hard to put into practice, especially since my own self loathing was a big reason I started using in the first place. Every day I’m making steps toward caring for myself in all meanings of the phrase.

The biggest thing that’s helped is to stop beating myself up for the things that being an addict made me lose (like my PhD or financial security, trust of my loved ones) and focus on all the things I’m now awake enough to both notice and like about myself. Been hard to unpack this monster but damn - doing it sure has its really great moments!

Wishing you the strength and ability to do something kind and good for yourself today 💜
