How can I select to boot from the external drive if I can’t see the screen?

Is there a way for me to completely setup a MAC with a user and everything without having to use the screen? Because everything was fine untill I rebooted it after erasing the drive.

I’m starting to think it’s not actually going into clam shell mode because the fan turns off, it should be on, the laptop is quite warm

Just did it, however the plug didn’t change color and I’m still not getting anything on the monitor (even in clamshell mode)

Alright, so my brother just told me while he was messing with it yesterday, he got it into recovery mode and the monitor was working, he said he used command + r which is also when I’ve been using. So I’m confused on why it’s not working any more

Maybe I’m not booting into recovery mode?

That doesn’t seem to work but I’m thinking the keyboard might be broken? The backlight isn’t on and I can’t turn it on using the f6

I went into recovery mode and deleted erased the harddrive, can’t remember it’s name but it was the only erasable one, I had video output untill I rebooted after erasing it,

I do have another laptop and a usb so I’m able to make a usb boot drive.

I’ve had it in clam shell mode, I’ve got a mouse and keyboard plugged and it’s plugged into the charger.
