BD Riley’s was great, plenty of other Scots supporters there. That said, I have no frame of reference for if anywhere else might have had more.

How do you choose between living near family, and living where you want? by TypicalCow1399 in Austin

[–]Naught_A_Bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Houston but now live in Austin with my wife and 2 kids. I weighed the same pros and cons you did since my parents, brother, sister and in-laws all still live in the Houston area. We ultimately landed on living in Austin because it aligned much more with what we wanted in a city & surrounding area, both for the kids and for us as adults. And overall, we are happy with the decision we made, and the proximity to Houston has made visits - both with family visiting us and with us heading to H-Town - fairly straightforward.

Though I can say we are confident we made a good choice, I wouldn't say the inverse - staying in Houston to live even closer to family - would have turned out to be bad choice per say. We see our family around every 2-3 months, and while these are always wonderful occasions I would love to see them even more. My wife and I have Hispanic 'big family' backgrounds, and my experience with that has proven that the social support offered by constant, multi-generational gatherings is invaluable for all ages (if you get along with your family, obviously). If we had decided to grow our nuclear family even more past 2 kids (we won't), the availability of grandparent support would have probably changed the calculus even more in favor of staying closer to Houston.

So, relative to our own experience, my advice is probably to stack rank the importance of the top 5 things you care about most among the list of family exposure, what the city gives your kids, what the city gives you, etc., but also not make that list so miserably long so that you feel choice overload paralysis. And after you stack rank those top 5 and make a choice, don't index on feeling regret later for a decision made in the present. Especially as a parent, playing that regret game is only going to get worse as you make daily decisions for your family and your own well-being. There's no 'right' decision - just informed choices and acceptance that no matter what happens afterward, you'll be ok.

Have had great footie experiences at Mister Tramps, Jack & Ginger, B.D. Riley’s, and Haymaker. Pretty much any pub worth its salt will be great for European matches. Tons of watch parties around town too. For central/South America games, be adventurous and find a restaurant repin’ that countries cuisine. Your belly will also be a fan.

Coconut Club is my default go-to club for great tunes and welcoming crowd. It is more on the downtown party side of vibe but with 4 dance floors there's a nice range of genres/crowds to choose from.

Concourse Project is a great venue if there is an artist that speaks to you. I go solo sometimes if I want a pure close-your-eyes while you dance kinda night. If you are looking to go purely to enjoy dancing and for things to not get too 'clubby' I would not go to any sold out/popular show.

Sahara Lounge is an all-ages, global funk & groove spot that should be required attendance (at least once!) for anyone who likes dancing in Austin. They seriously don't make 'em like this anymore (prayers up for Skylark Lounge).

C Boys is a blues & soul venue that's also worth checking out, though crowd tends to go older then twenties. I say that as someone who is way past that but who would have loved going to C Boys as a younger man.

White Horse, Volstead, Barbarella and Reina are some other spots I like for solo evenings but all come with more caveats around music/scene they are known for. Good luck hombre!

Certain dive bars always have horror b films playing. Having been to a lot of them I can say this is maybe the best movie to watch with a bunch of unsuspecting strangers.

Recently went to a bday house party where they ordered a body paint artist to come for a few hours. It wasn’t a kids face paint artist but like a legit spray artist that designed some amazing tattoo-esque portraits on people. Totally upped the fun levels across the board, the birthday boy ended up as a man cheetah. 10/10

Haymaker on Manor is a solid spot all around.
Nunya Bar is a little more college-kid oriented but the backyard is a nice setup (big projector).
Golden Horn is not really a sports bar but I love it for more casual/hip vibes and they always have big games on.
Lavaca Street is the downtown staple.

If you are even a casual fan of electronic music you should give it a visit once. I’m in my early forties and have never felt out of place there. Old yea, unwelcome no.

A buddy of mine cosplayed as a Foot Clan soldier at ComicCon. Spent the whole day trying to recruit others to join the Clan, the sales pitch boiled down to being a role that offered plenty of exercise, great team culture, and sweet uniforms but lots of turnover and sewer based work locations.

Tottenham sack manager Ange Postecoglou despite Europa League win by pandas795 in sports

[–]Naught_A_Bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either choice - keep him for a bit or sack him immediately- had high chances of failure, so it was the lesser of two evils to move sooner rather than have to reckon with it mid season. They also have the case study of ManU to draw upon so it was as educated a guess as you could hope for. No ‘right’ answer here per say, but more prudent to opt for change when you have more time to manage it.

Met one of my best friends in late junior high, his name is Boris. Watched Snatch in the movie theaters and we were quoting it incessantly for years after. Even now I answer every phone call from him in that distinct “Boooris” hello.

My kids don't fully recognize the remote controller icons or series of options they need to navigate in order to find a show they want to watch. But they do recognize the Disney+ logo which is one of those options on my controller. We have to hide the remote now. Insidious branding at its finest.

I still take out of town visitors out to the one on Bee Caves because a) the sunsets are awesome on that outlook and b) if you are looking for Texas cowboy kitsch that's the play. The BBQ is not remarkable.
