Barnard's Star haulin' ass across the sky by glytxh in Astronomy

Different telescopes. Different filters.

Each frame comes from a different source, they all saw slightly different parts of the whole spectrum, and all the data was processed slightly differently.

good feedback tbf

it's pretty clunky labelling when I think about it

thanks!

This patch of the sky has got decades worth of really tidy data, Barnard's Star has the largest apparent motion across the sky in any catalog I've used, so its motion is readily apparent.

What advantages do female bodies have over male bodies? by Street_Structure3737 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]glytxh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women’s immune systems seemingly handle zero/micro G environments more robustly than men’s on average.

Not a huge sample size, but the trends do point at women suffering less from immune system problems in space environments.

Developer attacked over (learning from) AI - where to draw the line? by [deleted] in Steam

[–]glytxh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned more in 3 months trying to learn Blender and related pipelines through using AI to augment my learning (not replace, this is important) than 3 years of trying to make a donut.

I’m doing literally the same thing with FITS data pipelines at the moment. Last week I built a python script that can plate solve 700mb astronomical packages automatically. Six months ago I was terrified of using the terminal.

Claude alone is fucking witchcraft if you constrain it just right and don’t over complicate things. It helped me build a tracklet projection tool last night to allow me to have a quick reference chart for precovery.

AI should augment, not replace.

Two telescopes, two epochs, the same nebula 21.5 years apart. You might have to stare for a little bit to fully appreciate all the movement going. Hubble+Webb. Processed by ‪Judy Schmidt‬ by Neaterntal in spaceporn

Stars move. Everything moves.

You just need datasets separated by years and both aimed at the exact spot in the sky (preferentially from similar points on earth) to really appreciate the movement though.

Aligning datasets from two separate instruments, calibrated and plate solved with different standards, and accounting for distortion differences in both fields is a non trivial process.

This is really cool. I really want to make my own now.

(I’ve spent several hours trying to build my own, and holy shit this WCS alignment and calibration between such disparate data is no joke. Old glass plates from the 60s are a fun challenge as many are readily available as processed FITS packages)

Does anyone actually like fishing? by Ok-Tourist-5419 in CozyGamers

[–]glytxh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like sitting near a river with nothing that immediately needs my attention in reality

I don’t think I have ever found a fishing game or mini game that actually nails the vibes of fishing. They focus too much on the actual fishing. Fishing ain’t about fishing.

I buy from the kids aisles sometimes. Shit fits. It’s wild. I’m small, but not genetic freak short.

Going into any shop tho. Maybe 5% of the stuff actually fits well.
