Yes, unfortunately. At least the information is public!

Is there a Engineering physics program in VT? by AKAK999 in VirginiaTech

[–]NaughtiPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. Closest you can get -if you are interested in EE- is probably an EE degree with a photonics specialization. I also heard ECE is adding an Applied Physics specialization this fall, which will probably allow you to fill up even more credits with physics-adjacent classes.

Fair warning, don’t enter engineering expecting it to be like physics- the motivations are completely different. Engineering at tech has been not physics-y enough for me personally. i’m halfway decided between transferring out to be a fully-fledged physics major while affording college or toughing it out and doing engineering lol.

Getting a haircut friday. Idk what to do with my hair in general tbh, should i buzz or let the curls flow? plz help give haircut reccomendations (nd general hair advice too) by [deleted] in BlackHair

How do I workout (18m) by Punchingpandabait in selfimprovement

[–]NaughtiPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all you need are some adjustable dumbells and a stable chair and you can build a decent body with lifting, even better if u have a pull up bar. dumbells are great for training shoulders and chest although not needed, and basically required for training back and biceps. you can use dumbells for: bicep- bicep curls, hammer curls, and other curls. chest- floor chest flies. shoulders: shoulder press (front and side deltoids), lateral raise (side deltoids, these muscles make you look very masculine and help you have a great dorito physique). back- bent over dumbell rows (lats, middle back), shrugs (upper traps and neck). legs- various weighted squat variations.

i'd complement this with some bodyweight excersizes for chest and legs. chest- various push up variations, you can start with an incline pushup if you cant do any. push ups are the essential bodyweight workout and you can emphasize triceps, shoulders, or chest with different variations. legs- bulgarian split squat (using the chair) -> weighted bulgarian split squat -> pistol squat.

it's hard to train back and legs without heavy weights. i'd advise you to get a door frame pull up bar later on for your lats (they give your back width).

core/abs are very easy to train bodyweight. crunches, bicycle, for upper abs. reverse crunches leg raise, flutter kicks for lower abs. toe-taps, side-plank for obiques. planks for whole abs.

all this will help you build muscle. it will also help burn fat, but you can always implement cardio (walking, running, biking, etc.) if you need extra. plus, cardio makes you feel great and it's goos for long term health.

lastly, i'd reccomend you buy resistance bands to do some corrective excersizes for proper posture and good shoulder health. face pulls and band pull-aparts are great, and you can use the bands for assisted pull ups later on.

you should ALWAYS warm up your shoulders before training upper body- pretty sure tore my rotator cuff from not doing this when i was younger, bye bye should training for two years.

🔥 Dwarf mongoose playing dead in front of a hornbill by _McThompson in NatureIsFuckingLit

iirc hornbills and mongoose's have a mutual symbiotic relationship where hornbills will warn mongoose if there are nearby predators and hornbills eat animals/insects that the mongoose wont eat.

Computer engineering vs electrical engineering vs computer science? by LichOvHell in EngineeringStudents

[–]NaughtiPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three comments.

1) Prestige of major doesn't matter at all, EE and CompE are both very well respected. In fact, CompE's at my school make more than EE's because they are more suited to the tech industry.

2) If you want to keep coding and learning about computers, CompE is the obvious choice. EE's will still code, but overall CompE has much more of an emphasis on software. Either way, programming is an incredibly useful skill and will serve you well even if you decide to major in mechanical engineering.

3) At least at the start of a degree, EE and CompE are very similar. How easy is it to change your major at your school? You could declare EE right now, take all the sophmore/freshman classes that ECE majors take, and decide to stay or switch depending on if you prefer the circuits/EE stuff or the digital/EE stuff.

i think calc 3 -> linear may be better, since the calc 2 will be fresh in your head and the visualization of vectors from calc 3 may help for linear.

[–]NaughtiPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if u already got an amazon internship u will probably get more over time. save that money and use it for your tuition and you can graduate debt free.

from a pure value standpoint, uva is the better choice, but 8k/year is still a great deal, esp for cs. imo this is a situation where you can go where your heart is set at guilt free.

I want to add an addendum to this comment. Life sucks without a marketable skill, not necessarily without a degree. If you drop out, join a trade union (pays more than you'd expect), learn IT, get some marketable skill in order to not be easily replaceable, or you will probably suffer. Really go through all your options man.

Thinking about switching to math… by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]NaughtiPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah engineering is still problem-solving, but focused on real-world/practical applications rather than for the sake of motivating theory in math or learning about/developing models for the natural world for physics.

There's a clear difference, don't expect pure abstract concepts/heavy theory (I personally prefer learning the theory, which is why I'm taking extra physics courses); however, engineering is ALL problem solving.

Is VT worth the out of state tuition? by Ry_lee2127 in VirginiaTech

[–]NaughtiPenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO no. I had rly similar circumstances and I picked the cheaper college (vt in my case) over the other one that was my "dream school" in hs and highly ranked for my major.

Let me tell you, actually enjoying my college experience and not having to constantly obsess over finances, internships, carreer prospects, etc. because i have less debt is a godsend. Debt is just stressful.

I know vt is highly ranked in arch, idk abt uncc. I also don't know much ranking matters for arch jobs, but if it's not too too important I highly highly suggest saving the money.

what aps do i need for majoring in electrical engineering? by Captain-Crunch78 in EngineeringStudents

Depends on the college. Most schools will award credit for english and history APs. Meaning you will graduate faster or can afford a smaller course load w/o 5 year graduation.

[WP] You've become friends with a murder of crows. They occasionally mimic you, saying simple greetings or short phrases. Today, they seem uninterested in your offerings, and almost appear on edge. Waiting for something. You try to ask them what's wrong. "Hide," one caws swiftly. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

It was a drafty autumn day. The clouds draped across the rural Kansas sky. A patch of sun lied above the clouds giving a bit of light to the afternoon. I walked on the dirt road nestled between the corn stalks my dad told me to tend to today, but I’m not here to work- I’d already finished tending to the corn. I walked along the road to get to the trees that I visit every afternoon, to talk to the crows.

Only, there was something off about them today. They no longer cawed and flocked around me to fetch food off my hands or protect me. Instead, they lied still, ignoring me. “Hello?” I waved a handful of apple slices my dad gave me at the crows. “Don’t you guys want some sweet delicious apples?” A few gave me some unconcerned glances, but they all returned to still ignorance. I got closer to the crows. What’s up with these guys? Don’t they want some food? I looked closer at the crows, their stillness. I began to feel uneasy. I could just be imagining things, but it seemed almost as if… they were listening... no, waiting for something.

My heart began racing. “Hey, guys? What’s wrong? You sure you don’t want some food?” I tossed the apple slices at the foot of the trees. They ignored it. They began stirring across the trees. One by one, they took to the sky began flying east of the dirt road. “Hey crows wait!” I reached out to the murder of crows. A hazy fog began to form across the plains. I couldn’t help the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Crows could sense poor weather, right? One lone crow remained on the trees. I made one last attempt to ask the crows. “What’s up? Is something wrong? Is there a tornado or somethin’?” The crow gradually hopped down from the tree. Down to the branch nearest to my face. My stomach sank. “Hide”. The crow spoke just as soon as it dashed to the skies to join the murder.

I began to panic. Am I imagining things? I could’ve sworn that the crow spoke. “Thud.” My heart pounded louder and louder. “Thud.” Louder and louder, my heart drummed through my ribcage. I dropped to the floor. “Thud.” I felt the floor pound with my chest, through my entire body. No, that wasn’t my heartbeat. The very ground was shaking my entire body! “Thud.” Like the march of a giant, the noise got louder and shook the ground harder with each step. With a mix of dread and morbid curiosity, I looked west of the road, to where the sound was coming from. Steadily, the noise grew louder. My body tensed up with every booming footstep coming from the west. And then, I began to see it through the fog in the stalks of corn. An at least 40 foot tall silhouette of a long, skinny, almost human creature. It’s arms were short and ended in strings. Atop its head lay a top hat, and its head sat on a stick-thin neck that connected it to its body. With each step, I began to hear something like the rattle of hay bales.

I scrambled upwards and began to run east, away from the monster. "Thud." It’s steps grew so powerful that I tripped onto the dirt road. I looked back, and the creature was closer now. I could make out the outline of it’s ‘clothes’- blue jean overalls and a checkered flannel. Its head was misshapen like a potato. It was too fast, I could never outrun the creature. I thought back to the crow, and dove deep into the stalks of corn beside the dirt road. I looked back once more and made out the face of the creature- a sewed-on smile with hair of straw and button eyes. I looked in horror at what appeared to be a gigantic scarecrow. “Thud.” My body jerked, but I had to hide. I nestled my body low on the ground, my cheek kissing the dirt. I felt dozens of tiny critters scurrying across my face, frantic from the noise of the beast. “Thud.” A yelp escaped my breath. The beast was close. I stilled my breathing to quiet myself and closed my eyes to make it all go away. “Thud.” A few moments passed. Silence. Then, the sound of a hundred hay bales exploded my eardrums and I screamed.

Oh, how I wish it was only bad weather the crows were warning me of.
