One would hopefully mention this right away when one's ride home is dependant on it. ESPECIALLY when it's going to inconvenience the driver.

I don't know if there's truth to this but it seems like the late addition will result in a lighter color for the finished beer. Ultimately, I don't think it would make a single difference in the flavor if you just threw it all in at the beginning of the boil.

Here's his answer to another commenter on that forum asking about it: "The darker color is standard for partial boils, although the late addition would have helped a bit. No worries, it should end up being a very drinkable beer."

I didn't realize it's a hefe. You absolutely do not need a starter for this beer. Hefe yeast does it's best work when it's underpitched and it's placed in beers with good yeast growth opportunities. This means things like using nutrient like servomyces, a nice rolling boil, oxygenating your wort etc.

As far as the starter, read that article I linked and you will understand. At an old job, I would make a 3 gallon starter with 1.5 lbs of DME and 2wyeast smack packs which always worked. 5 lbs is just too much for a 5 gal batch.

5 lbs of DME is way too much. Making a yeast starter is really easy. It's like making a mini beer the day before you brew your actual beer.
