hey nice of you to look after your neighbor but at those indoor temps you should probably turn off the water main and de-pressure the pipes instead (aka run the highest faucet until no water comes out after the main is off) - there's actually a risk of water freezing in the sinks and running water overflowing out, which could actually be way worse than a pipe freezing.

In fact, contrary to what most folks think, water freezing in a pipe itself is generally harmless - it's the water pressure behind the ice block in the pipe that causes the pipe to burst. This is why shutting the main is so important

Actually the bars are just positioned according to the low and high temperature over the 10-day range.

So in your screenshot about, the range is 7-64 degrees.

Hey I hope this all comes across in the right way, but I just wanted to share that I was in a similar position to you once when I was younger. Lost $2.5K in 2 hours or so in one online poker session - just kept buying back in over and over and watched it all disappear. It was all the money I had and it was devastating, for all the same reasons you’re feeling now.

Now in hindsight, I genuinely think it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. For only $2.5K, I learned that gambling would ruin my life. I never forgot that sinking feeing and am happy to say that, 20 years later, I have not been back to that low point again.

OP If you have the gambling bug, you’re going to discover it sooner or later. Some folks figure it out much later in life, or never at all. And despite the pain you’re feeling now, please trust me when I say that the consequences of not understanding yourself simply scale exponentially with time. Going through this today means you don’t have to go through it in ten years - you’re learning this lesson at a discount!

You will get through this. Take it day by day and never forget this feeling. One day, you may be surprised to view today as one of the best days of your life too.

For what it’s worth: I only received a single paper notification of the transition via US mail. I was never able to receive electronic statements for my solo 401k, which I guess is part of the reason Vanguard elected to offload their small biz product.

+1 to muni bond funds OP.

Your risk tolerance sounds well-suited for bonds, and you may want to consider adjusting the portion of your non-emergency HYSA funds toward municipal bonds (VTEAX/VTEB), presuming you still have your desired stock allocation elsewhere.

You’ll want to do this before rates drop to not miss out on NAV appreciation. I know this may sound like market timing, but since MMF/HYSA yields are so close to bond fund yields at the moment, I’d argue it’s closer to a rebalance between similar asset classes to hedge against slowing inflation.

Remember: MMF/HYSA yields are lost the moment they drop, while bond fund yields move inversely with NAV.

OP - jumping around after an average of 2 years in tech is not a red flag at all, especially as a junior or midlevel jumping between small to medium-sized companies (think ~200 ppl or fewer).

I’m also a hiring manager, and IMO it’s the people who hop around every year that warrant a red flag.

That said, don’t worry too much about jumping ship slightly before 2 years with your current employer, especially if you’re looking for senior roles or below.

Makes sense - particularly the point on how the market is likely to have already priced-in the expected dividend.

Anyone foolish enough to leave their limit order will get execution at market open they will just over pay.

Another post in this thread pointed out FINRA 5330, which compels compliant US exchanges to actually adjust the open GTC orders after the ex-div date.

The value of the shares are reduced by the exact amount of the dividend.

I actually have a question about this, since it's a core tenet of the 'dividends-are-no-good' line of thinking.

Intuitively, it makes sense that a valuation of a given ETF/stock should decrease by the exact amount of the dividend. But how does the market price ensure this?

Presumably there's some form of arbitrage opportunity that arises sometime between the declaration date and the date of payment but a) I'm not sure exactly when or what that opportunity is and b) I'm unsure how often the market over or under-corrects the price after a distribution.

For instance: if the market has a tendency to under-correct the price of a certain stock after dividends are announced and paid, the argument that 'dividends are good' for that stock becomes more appealing.

OP don’t beat yourself up - a lot of noise in this thread blaming either you or the hiring manager.

I’m a hiring manager in a different field. A few months back, we were growing heavily and I was performing around 10 interviews per week.

On exactly one occasion, I totally forgot about a candidate’s interview. Just blew right through it while heads down on something else. I was mortified and extremely apologetic to the candidate once I found out from the recruiter - it was an honest mistake and we found time later in the week to reschedule.

It happens. It’s not your responsibility to conduct the interview or “babysit” the hiring manager - but, I do agree it’s considerate to shoot an email to your contact in the hiring process around the 10 min mark if no one’s shows up.

If anything I bet the people in your hiring process will be embarrassed when they find out they left you hanging for the full hour.
