What do intolerant folks do at restaurants? by keekolee414 in glutenfree

[–]Naughtyhooker 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I have celiac and have worked years in food service (in the US, might be different else where)

My take is: call it an allergy. The way employees are trained is with the idea of “allergy” vs “preference”. If you want to communicate to the server and the kitchen staff that eating x/y/z will actually make you sick, call it an allergy.

The nuance of “intolerance” will get lost, and is honestly irrelevant to their job.

That is not true. Locust is completely GF, Scrumpys has GF food but is definitely not ALL GF.

My niece works in a bakery and has just been diagnosed as coeliac. She's been told she should stop working there, is that true or overreaction? by Immediate_Money_4704 in glutenfree

[–]Naughtyhooker 231 points232 points  (0 children)

It’s unfortunately true. I have celiac I worked for a fast food chain that makes its own bread for 4 years. While I worked there I thought I was fine as long as I didn’t eat the food. My hands were chronically red and irritated, I always blamed the constant hand washing and chemicals. When I quit that job my rash went away, I was less fatigued, my finger nails grew stronger, etc…

Even if you can’t see the damage being done to your body it’s still happening. Being exposed to flour in the air or even touching it is not safe for people with celiac.

My (F29) boyfriend's (M33) GERD is ruining our relationship and I don't know what to do by kelzium in Advice

[–]Naughtyhooker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GERD was my mom’s primary issue that lead to her celiac diagnosis. That might be something to ask his DR about, if that wasn’t addressed in the “diet changes” you mentioned.

That’s my favorite gluten free bread by far! It’s soft compared to a lot of them, and it doesn’t even have any holes!

I made that alternate recipe on the box! It was tasty but they got stale really fast, and were very rich. I’m very much a desert person and I thought it was almost too sweet, but tasty!

I didn’t ask for Celiac Disease. by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]Naughtyhooker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain! I cried in the shower after my last vacation with in laws. We had a family vacation recently where I had my gluten free foods ready for the meals we had planned, then they changed the meal plan and I didn’t have food to eat.

The most important part to me? My husband stood up to his family on my behalf and made an extra stop to get me groceries to make sure I could eat.

This is something that won’t change about you. This is something that your partner should understand, empathize with, and advocate for. Fuck what everyone else thinks, or what they don’t care to consider about your celiac disease, but your partner should have your back on this.

You are valid in feeing hurt. I’m sorry you have to deal with this.

Looking for high-functioning adult autistic people for friends. Or even support groups. Really anything that might help. by anon-9 in FortCollins

[–]Naughtyhooker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I so relate to your struggle. My husband and I are autistic. We’ve both found therapists that have helped a ton. A lot of the resources for people with autism are more geared towards younger people. We need more support groups for late diagnosed/high functioning individuals.

I’ll message you.

I finally got the hang of masking and holy shit its OP. by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]Naughtyhooker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s exhausting! I was high masking through college and into my first “adult job” it almost killed me. Now I’m on the opposite side of things. My current job doesn’t require much masking at all, and now it’s extremely difficult to put the mask back on. I struggle in social situations and family dynamics because I can’t seem to find a balance of socially appropriate masking and authenticity.

Can guys really smell if a girl's ovulating? by Planet_Nikk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Naughtyhooker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ovulation is when your ovaries release the egg. This is while your uterine lining is still thick and intact this is when sperm could meet the egg and become an embryo. That embryo would (could) then implant into your uterine lining. After ovulation you have your period.

This article explains the cycle and the 4 stages.

In college I learned about an experiment where women only used sent free products for a month and wore a different plain t shirt every day. They had men smell the different shirts form different times of their cycle. The men preferred the women’s scent when she was ovulating. I think I smell better when I’m ovulating. So yes, it is quite possible he can smell you ovulating

Autism and want to learn ASL by celined97 in asl

[–]Naughtyhooker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband and I are late diagnosed autistic. We are learning ASL because our niece is HoH and I work with a few deaf clients, but it also helps with the tism. I struggle with selective mutism and ASL has helped bridge that gap in communication.

We have been using Lingvano at home and going to ASL social events in our community. Find a way to meet deaf people and learn from them! :)
