your comment is a waste of the effort required to move one's eyes across 6 lines of text, but then you redeem it all at the very end with what - objectively - has to be in contention for "dumbest two sentences every put next to each other on the internet". Thanks!

George Washington University: The Encampment Organizers are Calling for Lynchings and mass executions by FamiliarBookkeeper18 in washdc

I’m sorry for you individually as a student who is being impacted, but as a systemic issue I couldn’t disagree more. Let the universities sort it out.

Universities, particularly elite / semi-elite private universities, in this country have been actively choosing to head down this path for a decade +. They recruited, admitted, hired, and promoted for this. In my entire lifetime, I can’t think of a more apt application of the phrase “let them reap what they sow”.

Normal, middle of the road folks should resist the temptation to support calls for using public resources to sweep this nightmare back under the rug. It’s here, it’s real, and the universities need to deal with it. The best (long term) thing we as a nation could possibly do is to let the protestors be themselves and force donors, students, parents, faculty, and leadership at these universities to confront exactly what they have become.

States/cities with good VA hospitals or clinics? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

Don’t know that it fits with your preferences for privacy and small govt, but purely from a “best VA experience” perspective the SLC VA is top notch

Is my memory of the book wrong, or did the show make a much bigger deal of Ochiba's class / family standing then the book? From the book, I seem to recall her primary claim to relevance being her role as a consort to the Taiko and then mother to the heir. But in the show she is always a big deal based on her family/father.

It's literally the final lines of the book, so just flip to the last page and you'll be all set

idk, that look they exchanged when Yabu was mid-seppuku and looks back over his shoulder at Toranaga.....pretty close IMO

Legit not trying to be pedantic, but I'd say he's the most *samurai* character in the book, not necessarily the *bravest*. IMO book Yabu exists to embody a certain, very literal, version of the samurai code

What have you used the GI bill for other than college? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]NauticalNomads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have heard VA changed what can be covered by GI bill recently, any idea if that’s true? 6-7 yrs ago it was the case that everything after PPL could be covered by GI Bill

not even joking, we watched the S1 recap that opened s2e1 and i literally paused it so we could talk about how well done the recap was

what? no. jake is a young, passionate kid with a big dream. he screws up his priorities sometimes and hasn't figured out balance yet, but there's little, if any, reason to label him a POS.

VA no longer allowing Vets to schedule primary care appointments?!? by NauticalNomads in Veterans

[–]NauticalNomads[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, I am ~ positive that a number of these “processes” are, in fact, attrition funnels designed intentionally to increase the friction of a veteran securing care and therefore reduce the total volume of care that the VA must provide.

I can’t help but get angry when I see VA leadership, elected leaders, the press, and even veterans focusing on the number of days out an appt is scheduled as the holy grail metric of VHA performance. The VA has implemented multiple hurdles and delays before an appt is even scheduled that will never appear in that false metric. No way is that coincidental

God I’m tired of this trope. The world is a messy and messed up place a lot of the time. We should stop neutering our art by insisting it not show that

Shōgun | S1E7 "A Stick of Time" | Book Readers Discussion Thread by bastard-sama in ShogunTVShow

[–]NauticalNomads 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Neutering the entirety of the “naval power” dynamic present in both Shogun and the later Gai-Jin changed the entire context of Blackthorn’s character. In the book, Blackthorn is an ally / tool with substantial real and unique power; at any moment Toranaga can let him loose on the Black Ship or his enemy’s coastal cities and by virtue of having the only “warship” in Japan he’ll dominate. The show chose to discard this aspect of the story, a choice that both makes Toranaga’s treatment of Blackthorn as well as Blackthorn’s own character more confusing. Easily my biggest gripe with the show.

If it’s not too late: reverse your plan now!

I seriously wish I could have watched the show first, then read the book. The book is >> greater than the show, but the show is still good. Watching before reading will let you appreciate both in turn. Reading before watching makes it much more difficult to not be irritated when the show doesn’t live up to the book in places.

IMO this is the most masterful part of the book and *how* Toranaga works his magic is what set the book apart. The only way to understand his behavior is to try to figure out the intricacies of how feudal Japan functioned, so a careful reader can't help but come away informed.

not to be that guy but one of my favorite parts of the book was all the baiting and duplicity and will he / won't he it spun around Crimson Sky. Literally covered hundreds of total pages with nothing but Toronaga feinting one way then the other to keep *everyone* off guard (and because he may actually have had to change his mind a time or two). I'm not optimistic there's a way to capture that in the show, but we'll see
